Kira-Kira by Cynthia Kadohata is about the Takeshima family. Kira-kira, which means glittering, is Katie's favorite word, she uses it to describe everything beautiful. This Japanese family moves from Iowa to Georgia when their family store closes. They get jobs in one of the many hatcheries in the state. Their family lives in a very small apartment, and their father works 16 hour days at the hatchery. Lynn, the oldest sister, is very intelligent while her younger sister, Katie, does not get as good of grades. Katie looks up to Lynn and they do everything together.
