The King’s Speech “The highest of distinctions is service to others”("George VI Biography"). Born on December 14,1895, to parents George V and Mary of Teck, Albert Fredrick Arthur George, later known as King George Vl ("King George VI"), would serve to be one of the most important and beloved contributors in the midst the second world war. Despite his disabilities in speech, with perseverance and determination, King George Vl was able to deliver a very personal speech to the British people addressing the commencement of the second world war, in which he gently and confidently touched their hearts and brought them together as one. Growing up, George experienced years of harsh criticism and was often humiliated by his father. He also received extreme disapproval from his father. The future King had to wear leg braces and was sexually abused by his nanny. It is said that the problems he faced as a kid eventually led to his stutter ("The Kings True Trauma").His father’s verbal abuse most likely caused young George to hesitate before answering. He was probably very shy due to the fact that he was sexually abused and because he had to wear leg braces, they didn't help his self esteem. All in all George was a very shy and hesitant young boy that suffered from a speech impediment. George was one of two children, his brother Edward was born on June 23, 1894, about a year before George. Because he was the first born son, Edward would be next in line to take the thrown. Therefore, George would have a slim chance of becoming King of England. He decided Spence 1 to dedicate his life to the royal navy. From 1909 to 1911 George was a navy cadet. On February 6, 1952, King Albert Fredrick Arthur George passed away peacefully in his sleep. He died at the age of 56 due to Coronary Thrombosis, a fatal blood clot to the heart. King George also suffered from lung cancer. The stress of becoming King unexpectedly, having to give numerous public speeches while challenged with a stammer and also having to lead his country through a second world war are said to have left him exhausted and ultimately contributed to his death (BBC News). “We cannot at this moment do more than record the spontaneous expression of grief.” Prime Minister Winston Churchill expressed (BBC News). George was greatly beloved by the British people for his efforts in the war and because of his multiple contributions, was dearly missed. “The highest of distinctions is service to others”("George VI Biography"), and serve he did.
