Have you ever worried that your little boy or girl is growing up too quickly? You are worried about the things they may hear or see at school or with friends. You may be worried that your sidekick is going to spend less time with you, or maybe even act dismissive towards you. This has been a thought in the back of parents' minds for decades, but the worrisome feeling may come at an earlier age now. With technology, and kids obtaining access to it sooner and sooner as the years pass, we might be at risk of losing our kids to maturity. Maturity coming early doesn't seem like a bad thing if you think of it being about mannerisms or overall respect, but this is not what the internet wants to teach our kids. James Geddes, Tech Times online reporter, conducts a study where he asks parents when they feel their child is mature enough for a phone, although many of them felt their kids were growing up too quickly, most of them were okay with their children having a phone by age ten. However, parents said children should not have an email until age eleven, and they shouldn't have a Facebook account until age twelve. In this article Geddes states that "kids are maturing much faster these days, and parents feel the Internet and social media are to blame" (Geddes). Parents say that kids should have phones, so they can keep in contact with them, but why would a kid need a fancy phone for simple contact? When kids grow up with phones, they do dive into immature acts, but at the same time they are growing up quicker than ever before. This issue is greatly addressed in an article on The Huffington Post by Taylor Griffith, college student at Princeton University. Griffith discusses how the use of makeup in children and young teens has increased greatly in recent years. Kids are wearing full faces of makeup, not like the kind of makeup we would take from our moms and make a huge mess out of, but full on heavy makeup. Girls are beginning to wear makeup as young as eight years old. A majority of young females claimed that they felt they had to wear makeup in order to feel pretty. Griffith says, "A lot of young females, in my generation, too, equate a part of their self-worth with how they look on the outside and how much makeup is able to improve their appearances" (Griffith). Social media sites like Instagram have a huge influence on females' opinions of themselves. When you see someone, who is skinnier than you, prettier than you, more talented than you, and more well off than you, you get uncomfortable. You begin to feel subpar compared to other women...therefore, we see females as young as eight wearing makeup and dressing to look like the model or celebrities they may follow on
