There were several factors that contributed to the poor attendance of the kick-off team meeting. Jeff had the opportunity to communicate the purpose of the Quality Improvement (QI) goal’s and mission of the team in his e-vite which would have allowed the team to begin thinking of ways they could contribute to the meeting. Jeff’s meeting invite lacked any information regarding what the meeting was about thus it did not incite any interest in the recipients. Another important factor Jeff should have considered was the selection of individuals he chose to recruit to his team. The success of a team is dependent on a variety of talents or attributes that form the team association (Rubino, Esparza, & Chassiakos, 2014).

Each team member must be carefully chosen in order to add value to the team, not by merely selected for the sake of being able to complete a component of the project. Skillsets and technically competency should match or complement other team members in the formation of this QI Team (Rubino, Esparza, & Chassiakos, 2014).
As a leader Jeff should be flexible, open to feedback, and show that he holds himself accountable as well. Jeff should be vested in learning about each of his team member and what their strengths and weaknesses are so that he may motivate each individual according to keep them engaged in projects they are working on. When there is lack of motivation there is a potential for the team to fail. Lack of motivation is partly to blame for the lack of interest showed for the kick-off meeting. Jeff focus should be on “TEAM” – Together, Everyone, Achieves, More” to encourage and motivate his team to work as one (Brenner, 2007). The team will be looking to Jeff for leadership and advice and it’s imperative that he is a positive influence as a leader.
