In the Crucible there are many themes and motifs through out the story. It also introduces us to the stage of terror they had going on because of suspicion and hysteria. The Crucible is about numerous things but there are only three main things that make this story. The Crucible is about Weakness, truth, and courage all throughout the story. Weakness is the poverty of strength and quality to do something. There is a lot of weakness shown in The Crucible. It was shown by fear or of just being tired of fighting. One character that showed weakness was Abigail Williams. She showed weakness lying about going into the woods because she was afraid of getting into a great deal of trouble. In the passage she said “Let either of you breath a word, or the edge of a word, about the other things, and I will come to you in the black of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you.” This lets us know that Abigail was willing to kills someone just because she did not want the truth to get out. That is weakness because she does not have the strength to take whatever consequence come to her for telling the truth. It is not something that is made up or imaginary. Multiple characters showed truth in this play but the one that showed it the most was John Proctor. He showed truth because he was the one to tell everyone everything about how he sinned in order to save his wife. “ I have made a bell of my honor! I have rung the doom of my good name—you will believe me, Mr. Danforth! My wife is innocent, except she knew a whore when she saw one!” This shows that he wants to tell the truth and admit anything he can to tell them that his wife has done nothing.
