Kendrick Lamar Duckworth was born on June 17, 1987 in Compton, California. His parents had moved from Chicago to escape the city's rising gang culture. However Lamar's father was associated with the Gangster Disciples gang then later the Bloods. As the 1980s crack epidemic and West Coast gang presence grew, Lamar was exposed to gang activity and was influenced by it. He grew up on welfare and section 8 housing. In 1995, at the age of eight in Compton, Lamar witnessed his idols, Tupac and Dr. Dre, film the music video for the single "California Love", which highly influenced him. At age 16 he created a mix tape called Youngest Head Nigga in Charge (2003) which drew a lot of interest in his native Southern California. The project was enough to get Lamar a record deal with Top Dawg Entertainment, respected California Indy label. He would release two other acclaimed mix tapes, Training Day (2005) and C4 (2009), steadily working with other up-and-coming West Coast rappers like Jay Rock, Ab-Soul and Schoolboy Q. Lamar and these performers would form their own rap collective, Black Hippy. In 2010 Lamar dropped the K-Dot tag and began using his own name. He also put out a fourth mix tape, Overly Dedicated. That same year Lamar released his first full-length independent album under TDE, Section.80, it was released exclusively on iTunes. Dr. Dre took the young artist under his wing, becoming his mentor in both music and business. As the buzz on Lamar continued to build, Dr. Dre signed him to his independent record label, Aftermath Entertainment, alongside more established rap stars Eminem and 50 Cent.
