Kathrinas Evolution in Taming Of The Shrew by Shakespeare
Katherina in my opinion is smart and quick witted. I do not feel sorry for her
because she brought her situation on herself by letting Bianca and her father harass her.
Katherina is shown to be a shrew at the start of the play. As we delve into the play
we find that Katherina is not really a shrew but a caring and loving person. She acts
shrewish because she feels inferior to her younger sister who has three suitors. Katherina
acts like a shrew most of the time because it is the only way she knows how to get
anyone's attention, positive or negative.
Katherina has a great desire for a husband to love and care for her. She is lucky
that her father will not let Bianca get married because if this happens, Kate will be
forgotten and would never get married. Kate is fortunate enough to have a rich father
because somebody is bound to marry her because of her worth. Petruchio is looking for a
rich girl to marry.
Petruchio is not only in the wedding for money. He is attracted to Kate because of
her fiery disposition, her reputation of being a shrew and how violent she was. Petruchio
turns out to be a smart, understanding and patient man. Katherina is lucky to have a man
who cares for her like this and who wishes to tame her. He is attempting to train this wild
Kate, who has become even more vicious, because of the lack of suitors. Petruchio
intends to tame Kate by denying her clothes and food. He is clever to do this because it is
just like a cult where they deprive you of food and you lose the ability to make your
own choices. I feel sorry for Kate right now because she is going to become very hungry
and wild. She might injure herself in the taming process. Petruchio also shows her
understanding and love.
I feel the Petruchio is ambitious to go after Kate. He knows that she is worth the
effort. Petruchio figures that he will be able to tame Kate and make their marriage work.
It is all a game to him and he is the one who makes up the rules so he will not lose.
Katherina is lucky to have married a man who looks for more than beauty in a
girl. Petruchio is smart to tame Kate because Kate turns out to be a wonderful wife.
As was stated, although Kate, in many instances, appears to be controlled by others, she is actually in control of her actions. She is the one who does everything, such as allowing herself to be married off to Petruchio. Some people may say that she was forced to marry Petruchio, but she could have just run away if she really hadn't wanted to marry him. In this instance, Kate's family, especially her father Baptista, and society were influencing Kate to make the choice to not run away and follow through with the marriage. In the end, though, this was Kate's decision - no one made it for her, she had to make it for herself. She had the ability to choose to run away or do something else about being forced to marry Petruchio. Kate was already considered a shrew and often did not let society's roles for men and women influence her: Why couldn't she have done the same in this instance?

In my opinion from what I have understood from the text she is a tempestuous character. She is initially perceived as being wild bright and proud. Her character then develops a macabre quality that becomes a precocious influence over everybody in the village of Salem. She abuses this 'ability' to turn things to her advantage and others demise.
The Taming of the Shrew by William Shakespeare is a play that is ahead of its time in its views toward gender roles within society. Katherine is a woman who is intelligent, and is not afraid to assert her views on any given situation. She is paired with another obstinate character in Pertuchio. The marriage formed between the two is a match made in heaven for two reasons. First, because Katherine is strong enough to assert her views, and more importantly, she realizes when she should assert them.
Women’s rights are a household topic that has been around for the better part of the last century in America, however back when the play was written, women’s rights were unheard of. So when Petruchio didn’t let Kate eat or sleep after they eloped (IV.iii.47-48) “The poorest service is repaid with thanks, and so shall mine before you touch the meat.” Petruchio is controlling everything that Kate is doing, which includes whether she eats or not which is sexist nowadays, but back in the 16th century, it was normal behavior. Petruchio could possibly just be trying to get his woman the best food possible, or in the case of his wedding, the best tailored clothes for Kate. Petruchio brings in a tailor for his wedding, and when the dress doesn’t live up to his expectations, he lets the tailor know (IV.iii.113-121) “O monstrous arrogance!... that thou hast marred her gown.” Petruchio cares so much about getting everything for his wife to be perfect that he does not let one thing fall out of line for his wedding preparations. By charming her with kind words, Petruchio is able to manipulate Katherine into marriage and woo her, but in an unaccustomed way, as Kate is not used to men being so nice and direct with her. Petruchio is able to achieve this end by manipulating Katherine’s words. He twists what Kate says and makes it seem as if she is coming on to him sexually, while in reality he is the one implying the sexual innuendo. This manipulation can be seen when they have an argument about whether or not the wasp carries his sting on his tail or tongue, and Petruchio says “What, with my tongue in your tail? Katharina and Petruchio share an unusual relationship; he has trouble taming her, and she battles with keeping him happy, for she is now in love and is experiencing something new. "The Taming of the Shrew is sometimes seen as an account of the tyranny of man over woman, but this is a misinterpretation stemming from our distance from the assumptions of Shakespeare's day" (Shakespeare A to Z 626). The irony of their marriage is vividly expressed when it is revealed that Petruchio is merely looking for a woman who is capable enough to run his estate. In this sense, he has taken advantage of her, for she has unwillingly fallen in love. "He chooses Kate as he would a horse, for her high mettle, and he must use at least as much intelligence and energy in bringing her trust to him, as he would in breaking a horse…" (Greer 40).
