The first painting I am choosing to write about is Jean-Baptiste-Camille-Corot’s painting that was created in 1827 called, Trinita dei Monti. This painting has an old rustic/vintage look to it. This looks like an old Roman city on the coast. The colors in this painting are faded which I think make this painting more appealing and brings this painting to life. The old white building stands out right away which is in the center of this painting which looks like a church. You can see a bunch of other buildings around the harbor near the church and those buildings get smaller the further you go, as they would in pictures taken with cameras or in person. By looking at this painting it appears to be a city terrified by the tragedies on the horizon. Just like the title states, that is exactly what is happening in this image as the city of Pompeii is in its last seconds before the city gets destroyed. There is so much going on in this painting, just by looking at the facial expressions of these people you can see there’s so many emotion’s running through them and so much panic. You can see a few people bracing themselves, some families holding each other for the last time, some horses, a bright light from an opening in the sky and the rest of the sky is red, and you can see a woman in the center passed out like she fainted. The people in this painting are all wearing togas. This painting is recessional because the buildings run down diagonally and the people on the stairs as well. This painting is also painterly because you don’t see any gaps and everything in this image is squeezed together. This is also open because the image extends beyond the frame and you can tell because some of the building is cut off and you are not allowed to see the full city. Lastly, this painting is unity because there is only one light source which is the hole in the sky that lights up the whole city and there are many shadows where the lighting does not
