The first painting I am choosing to write about is Jean-Baptiste-Camille-Corot’s painting that was created in 1827 called, Trinita dei Monti. This painting has an old rustic/vintage look to it. This looks like an old Roman city on the coast. The colors in this painting are faded which I think make this painting more appealing and brings this painting to life. The old white building stands out right away which is in the center of this painting which looks like a church. You can see a bunch of other buildings around the harbor near the church and those buildings get smaller the further you go, as they would in pictures taken with cameras or in person. By looking at this painting it appears to be a city terrified by the tragedies on the horizon. Just like the title states, that is exactly what is happening in this image as the city of Pompeii is in its last seconds before the city gets destroyed. There is so much going on in this painting, just by looking at the facial expressions of these people you can see there’s so many emotion’s running through them and so much panic. You can see a few people bracing themselves, some families holding each other for the last time, some horses, a bright light from an opening in the sky and the rest of the sky is red, and you can see a woman in the center passed out like she fainted. The people in this painting are all wearing togas. This painting is recessional because the buildings run down diagonally and the people on the stairs as well. This painting is also painterly because you don’t see any gaps and everything in this image is squeezed together. This is also open because the image extends beyond the frame and you can tell because some of the building is cut off and you are not allowed to see the full city. Lastly, this painting is unity because there is only one light source which is the hole in the sky that lights up the whole city and there are many shadows where the lighting does not
Wayne, transforms this painting into a three dimensional abstract piece of art. The focal point of the painting are the figures that look like letters and numbers that are in the front of the piece of art. This is where your eyes expend more time, also sometimes forgiving the background. The way the artist is trying to present this piece is showing happiness, excitement, and dreams. Happiness because he transmits with the bright colours. After probably 15 minutes on front of the painting I can feel that the artist tries to show his happiness, but in serene calm. The excitement that he presents with the letters, numbers and figures is a signal that he feels anxious about what the future is going to bring. Also in the way that the colors in the background are present he is showing that no matter how dark our day can be always will be light to
Geographical features played a prominent role in the daily life of Pompeii. A geographical feature is a natural or manmade feature of an environment. For the city of Pompeii, the location was a key aspect of its daily life. In addition, the economic activity and industry was important in the everyday life of Pompeii’s citizens. Evidence also suggests entertainment played a large role in the life of the city’s population. Archaeological remains also stress the Roman influence of its streets and buildings. All these features contributed to the daily life in Pompeii.
When looking at the painting it gives us a glimpse of the past. It looks almost like a photograph. The fine detail from the building on the right with the statue on top. The citizens walking around.

Giorgione "loved to paint landscapes." Especially in "The Adoration of the shepherds" you can see how much effort he invested in painting a detailed background in form of a piece of coast and part of a village. When isolated this part takes on a life of its own (If concentrating you can see tiny details such as two persons standing at the edge of the coast.

Pompeii, rome was a city that had an extremely interesting and sublime history, this city had gone through a disaster that enabled many archeologists to find many artifacts that were held inside of this city of ash. In 79 AD Mount Vesuvius erupted, encasing the town in a sheet of not lava, but pure volcanic ash that caused for the city to have been completely buried and hidden from the world, Pompeii was no to be rediscovered for many years to come. "The ruined city remained frozen in time until it was discovered by a surveying engineer in 1748." (Owens). The eruption of Mount Vesuvius had caused for the city of Pompeii to remain in a "Time Capsul-like" state, making it a preserved ground for exploration.

In Giovanni Boccaccio’s Decameron, each day is foucused around a theme, which the members of the lieta brigata seek to incorporate into that day’s stories (with the exception of Dioneo). For the sixth day, the theme is decided to be people who employ a witticism to escape punishment or discomfort. To convey this message, many of the tales employ the usage of a bon mot, or a brief, humorous phrase. Throughout this day, unsightly persons, frequently employ the bon mot, which contrasts their wit with their less than desirable appearances. In addition to this, people of inferior rank are often shown to be more intelligent, and make better use of the bon mot than their masters, or other noble persons. All of these uses of wit go to show to the power of words, which is a recurring theme throughout the Decameron. In the sixth day of Giovanni Boccaccio’s Decameron, the lieta brigata tells stories wherein the characters escape humiliation or pain by means of a witticism. This theme is summed up in the use of the bon mot and people of less than desirable appearance, and of a lower class often uses the use of this device; all of these things go to show the power of words.
The composition concentrates mainly on the foreground .It has three main points of interest, the small rowing boats, the artificial island and the floating barge .It also has a stretch of trees and foliage in the background painted in a much lighter fashion. Monet?s painting has a very different composition from Renoir?s painting of Grenouillere, which was done at the same time; Renoir?s painting is focussed much more on the artificial island and the people on it. Monet uses a combination of thick bold brushstrokes and small short soft brushstrokes; this creates a nice varied look and helps give a good impression of perspective. The tone is also very varied as it is Very light in some areas, but it is also quite dark in others, such as the shades on the barge. The first painting analyzed was North Country Idyll by Arthur Bowen Davis. The focal point was the white naked woman. The white was used to bring her out and focus on the four actual colored males surrounding her. The woman appears to be blowing a kiss. There is use of stumato along with atmospheric perspective. There is excellent use of color for the setting. It is almost a life like painting. This painting has smooth brush strokes. The sailing ship is the focal point because of the bright blue with extravagant large sails. The painting is a dry textured flat paint. The painting is evenly balanced. When I look at this painting, it reminds me of settlers coming to a new world that is be founded by its beauty. It seems as if they swam from the ship.

To truly understand the cities of Vesuvius one must envision the social structure, which made these cities distinct from Imperial Rome and even more peculiar to the modern mind. Life may have ceased within the cities but it was the volcanic debris of 79AD that literally froze everything in time, preserving one of ancient Rome’s most contemporary societies of its era. Contrary to the Roman capital, Pompeii and Herculaneum’s social hierarchy had the most mobility and freedom than any other society as opposed to the unyielding social structure of Rome.
