Juxtaposition Used in, ¨Dulce Et Decorum Est¨ and, ¨My Papa's Waltz¨ In poems, ¨My Papa's Waltz” and , ¨Dulce Et Decorum Est¨ poets Theodore Roethke and Wilfred Owen use a powerful element in poetry called juxtaposition, where both negative and positive tones are being used to contradict each other. Through their use of this technique, readers can find hidden meanings to these contentious poems. Theodore Roethke is a very talented poet and used juxtaposition through the whole piece to show the child's unsure opinion of his father figure, and if it is abusive or a loving relationship. To convey this uneasy feeling in the piece Roethke says, ¨At every step you missed, my right ear scraped a buckle,¨ The narrator allows the audience to form opinions on how the two opposing fragments in the excerpt. That quote could imply a positive tone, knowing that the narrator is a small child and may be the height of the man's waist, where a belt buckle would be placed, or a negative tone by explaining that he may be hit physically. Through the story, juxtaposition is used again when Theodore Roethke writes, ¨ You beat time on my head with a palm.¨ When waltzing, time is measured in beats, which implies that the narrator and man are waltzing just as the title claims. Both Theodore Roethke and Wilfred Owen have achieved to write poems with an immense amount of controversy. One of promoting war and how it is negative, and one of a child trying to determine if his father is abusive. To also include, both speak of obvious violence, but their other positive tone differs. The positive tone found in, “My Papa's Waltz” can be described as thinking the actions destined is a Waltz and the positive from, “Dulce Et Decorum Est” is more about taking pride in war and one’s country.
