Life is precious and we live it only once, however, what we do with it is to our own discretion. Today, we see many young ages decide to live a life of misdeed and become what is known as juvenile criminals, but with these unethical actions come with a consequence and to deal with these unlawful adolescent we have the Juvenile Justice Department. The juvenile justice department is a system used to address and deal with youth that are caught and convicted of crimes. However, when young offenders commit a serious crime or constantly being in trouble with the law, they are waived into Adult court where they will be subject to any punishment. Most of these juveniles are not given the opportunity to change their life around because we assume these teenagers will always have a reputation of being a felony. Based on the research done by scientists, these teenagers still have the potential to change since their brain isn’t fully matured and we have to give them a chance to build their future. Often times, teenagers would experience mental breakdowns that can affect their erratic behaviors and decision making; that’s why we need to provide them all the help they need. Of course going to prison can sometimes change a person as this was proven in Scott Anderson’s article, “Greg Ousley Is Sorry For Killing His Parents. Is that Enough?” However, Greg Ousley finally realized his mistakes after 20 years in prison. That is why I believe teenagers can learn from their crimes early if we implement the restorative justice program. As I have mentioned before, a teenager’s brain is still under the development of being fully mature. This can affect many of the adolescents unusual and immoral choices and because of this we can’t always hold them accountable for their responsibility of their crimes. As you see, there are evidences that some juveniles have the potential to reform themselves because they realized the mistakes they’ve done and due to this they are finally piecing their life back together.
