The theme of The count of Montreal Cristo, is one of hope, justice, mercy, and vengeance. It's a story of Edmond Dantes, a sailor who is betrayed by his enemies & thrown into jail for a crime he didn't commit. He was accused of "committing treason and being a bonapartist". In the 14 years Edmond is in jail his personality starts to change. This story takes place during "the Napoleonic Era while the usurper, Napoleon has escaped to his place of exile, the isle of Elba, located in the Mediterranean Sea".
Seven years into prison Edmond is seeking revenge on his enemies and has lost all hope.
A priest who is in the same prison as Edmond has been digging a hole for five years, ready to escape realized he's been digging in the wrong direction and dug a hole into Edmonds cell. In exchange for Edmonds help, the priest offers to teach Edmond all kinds of knowledge. The old man helps Edmond escape from prison, and shows Edmond where he can find the hidden gold of Monte cristo.

The story begins with Edmond arriving into port with the news that he will become a captain of a ship, he is also engaged to a beautiful woman named Mercedes, Edmond is very well liked and has faced success early in life this causes jealousy between Edmond and three other men Danglars, Fernand Mondego, and Caderousse. Danglars the treasure of the ship Edmond was just appointed captain of becomes jealous purely for the reason that Edmond has become so successful at a young age. Fernand has become jealous of Edmond because of Fernand is in love with Edmonds fiancé Mercedes. Caderousse, Edmonds neighbor, is jealous of Edmond because of the fact that Edmond is so much luckier than Caderousse. Together these three men, Danglars Fernand and Caderousse, make a letter accusing Edmond of the act of treason. Edmond is in fact carrying a letter for the recently deceased captain of the ship to give to a group of Bonapartist in Paris so even though Edmond himself is not a Bonapartist, the task is still enough for him to be tried for treason. The prosecutor, Villefort sees through Danglars, Fernand and caderousse’s plan and decides not to send Edmond to Jail until Edmond reveals the name of the intended recipient who is Villerfort’s father. No, not only is it not satisfied, but also ironically he damns himself for all eternity!
Though he may seem acquitted and amiable, Gerard de Villefort can be dangerous and even murderous. Gerard has done numerous things in his life to corroborate his sinfulness, including the assayed murder of his son, Andrea, by burying him alive when he was a newborn. Gerard is also one of the three main conspirators in the Count's arrest and imprisonment; it is he who is the most measurable of the three. The Count, Edmond Dantes, was an innocent man about to be married, before Gerard’s conception between right and wrong was twisted by the name of his father in a letter. Also, Gerard forces his wife to commit suicide; even though he had had many faults of his own.
Many people take much pride in numerous things some being: their job, family, political views, even as much as in their favorite sport. People make mistakes big and small, but it is how one deals with the situation and the mistake, that shows the morality in a person, and shows who he or she may be. “The only crime is pride,” Sophocles, is still held to be true; for instance, pride itself can cloud a persons’ mind and caused him or her to commit the crimes he or she did. Pride is thought to be a good thing but in many cases it is proven otherwise. Even though there is some truth in “the only crime is pride” the crimes/mistakes caused by pride are not forgivable, and “yielding” does not help at all; pride is not just to prove oneself right, but also not to look “weak” in the eyes of others.
Revenge is best served cold or so says the well-known expression. This idea of revenge that they seek is usually to restore a balance and take an “eye for an eye” as the bible says. Revenge, if by chance everyone were in Plato’s perfect utopia, would be in a perfect form, where justice and revenge would be one, and the coined phrase an “eye for an eye” would be taken literally. By taking an eye for and eye, and punishing those who did wrong equally as they did wrong, there is justice. However, this revenge sometimes goes to far and is consequently not justice. This notion of Revenge and justice is often in literature, one of the better-known being the novel The Count of Monte Cristo, written by Alexandre Dumas. However, literature is not the only time that revenge and justice is discussed in. Works and Rules and real-life events that took place like the Bible, Hammurabi’s code, Twelve Tables, and others each have something different about the topic. More religious texts seem to forbid violence, while laws, such as the Hammurabi’s code, recommend revenge, but equal revenge. By judging from literature, it can be concluded that most authors have different opinions on the matter at hand, and revenge is sometimes justice, but usually not, and tends to lead to violence that was not intended.

Through the haunting confession of the narrator, Montresor, the reader is able to feel what Fortunato had endured half a century ago. In this tale of revenge and murder the dark, damp, and bone-filled catacombs provide a contrast to life during the “madness of the carnival” (553).

The prisoner informs Dantes that he knows where a treasure is that one man can not even dream about. Dantes friend then happens to die, leaving Dantes with the information of where the treasure is. After escaping, and cheating death, Dantes strikes it rich when he discovers the treasure of which his friend talked about. From here on, the Count of Monte Cristo is born, and he sets off to seek revenge at those who put him in prison. Many people believe that Edmond abandoned his former self and tried to became the Count of Monte Cristo however, there are still some traces of Edmond Dantes locked up inside the Count.
