Julie & Julia should not be considered a feminist text. Katha Pollit’s review of Julie & Julia as a feminist text is inaccurate, as the film is laced with patriarchal views and underlying sexism. Julie & Julia also fails to be inclusive of a range of women and the problems they face, and so Julie & Julia should not be called a feminist film.
The textbook definition of intersectional feminism states that “Women experience oppression in varying configurations and in varying degrees of intensity.” It works on the premise that no women are the same and thereby experience different struggles. The current wave of feminism, 4th wave feminism, focuses on intersectionality and many intersectional feminists have noted that feminism that isn’t all inclusive is not truly feminism. Julie

In the first scenes of the film we see Julia in the process of moving into a new apartment – one which she hates. She and Eric have moved to be closer to Eric’s job, even though Julie is visibly upset by the decision, she accepts it because it is to Eric’s benefit. Similarly, we see Julia moving from city to city with Paul because his job demands it, and Julia is expected to uproot her life and passively follow Paul. This perpetuates the stereotype of the man being the head of the house and being the breadwinners. It shows how Julie and Julia are still doing things because it is to their husbands benefit and they do not have a major say in decisions directly affecting their lives, showing they are not truly equal to their husbands.
Another example of the sexism in Julie & Julia are present in the scene where Julie is complaining to Eric about not liking her friends, and Eric notes that he cannot help because “Men like their friends.” This scene shows how women are pitted against each other and seen by each other solely as competition, which in itself is
According to feminist scholar Victoria Bromley, intersectionality is a theory used by feminists that considers the intertwinement of systems of oppressions, intricate multiple identities of individuals, and social inequalities of society. Each of these factors influence the lives of humanity and have ultimately created a world where being different can either be a negative or positive thing. Through the use of expression and persuasion, Bromely argues that intersectionality analyzes the complexity of multiple identities and their interrelationships, the experiences and positionalities of those with multiple identities and their existence within the frameworks of power, which are systems of inclusion and exclusion, and hierarchies of privilege,
Feminism is evident throughout the typical gender stereotypes such as the ‘perfect’ girls are the blonde, skinny ones. When students are asked about their thoughts on ‘the plastics’ in the beginning of the movie, they tell that they are preppy and attractive. The stereotypes in this movie cause hurt feelings and discrimination towards all of the females. Girls were also viewed as sex symbols based on their looks and physical appearance, not their ability and intelligence. In the movie, most of the girls are known for copying ‘the plastics’ look which is usually short skirts and tank tops making the outfit look provocative. Another example is on Cady’s first day of highschool, she is asked if ‘her muffin is buttered’ which is a sexual question. Feminism is definitely shown throughout the female characters personalities and
The reading basically sums up different perspectives about feminism. Feminist theories have been going on for a long time. Feminist theories often describe women’s way of living and explaining its causes and consequences (Tong, 1998). It is how women act the way they act, think the way they think, and speak the way they speak.
What is intersectional feminism? Intersectional feminism is a fight for social justice that includes more factors than gender. This is important because there is no one-size-fits-all type of feminism. There are a variety of things that contribute to oppression. For example, white cisgender middle class person faces different discriminations than that of a transgender disabled black person.
Feminist and feminism is just one more example about inequality. While feminism simply is about the equality of all genders, it is often used as an insult. People often connect it with the stereotype of angry, man hating lesbians that do not shave. A lot of people also do not see the purpose of feminism, since they do believe that all genders are treated equally due to their own privilege like explained before. However, there is also a group of people believing that female feminists want to turn the current situation around and want to be treated better than men and want to be the privileged ones. Yet, with that accusation men actually admit that they are privileged and that all genders are not treated
Feminism, in its simplest definition, is the belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities. (Webster) Feminists fight for equality for women to men socially, politically, and economically. At the peak of feminist discourse is equality for men and women in education and in employment. However, feminism also focuses on more than issues regarding the rights of women in relation to men. Issues of gender equality and women’s right to control their sexuality are also at the core of feminist theory. A key argument made by many feminists is how women have very little control over their sexuality, mainly being defined and controlled by men. T...
Intersectionality is a term used to describe a situation whereby an individual has multiple identities and as result, the person feels that he or she doesn’t belong to one community or another. Because of the many conflicts in an individual’s identities, he or she could be a victim of multiple threats of discrimination (Williams, 2017). The discrimination could be a result of race, gender, age, health and ethnicity among others. To give an example, a black transgender woman could be discriminated in the workplace because of being black and also because she is transgender. From an intersectionality perspective, the woman faces multiple threats of discrimination because of the overlapping identities of gender and race and therefore the transwoman faces a bigger struggle (Barber, 2017). Transwomen of color will most likely encounter prejudices in the form of homophobia, racism or sexism in many dimensions of their life. The perspective of intersectionality is not only applicable to women but it can also be applied to males. For example, a gay Latino man could be discriminated based on race because he is an immigrant into
...ereotypes and patriarchal norms (Annie baking, Helen being a rich step-mom, the wedding itself), it also undermines patriarchy at the same time. At one point or another throughout the film all of the female characters go against the common conception and portrayal of women being proper and passive. They can be raunchy, drink, use vulgar language, and show they aren’t that different from men.
Agatha Christie wrote most of her books with the same recurring themes. One of the themes that Christie has in her books is feminism. The definition of feminism is the belief in the need to protect rights, and opportunities for women to be equal to those of men. It is also saying they can go through life without having a man in their lives and living as independent women. Anti-feminism is the opposite of feminism and says women are all the same and do need a man in their life. Christie uses feminism and anti-feminism to view women during the twentieth century in the three books.
Before I thought that feminism is about being like a man: being able to do the work they do, being independent, strong and self-sufficient, being able to protect themselves and live the life they want without being accused or blamed of doing something wrong. However not I understand that the core of feminism is about being equal and have freedom of choices. Women should not be discriminated or excluded from work places or communities because of the gender differences. Women should not be sexually abused or oppressed. Woman should not
To be a feminist is to integrate an ideology of equality and female empowerment into the very fiber of my life. It is to search for personal clarity in the midst of systemic destruction, to join in sisterhood with women when often we are divided, to understand power structures with the intention of challenging them. Even males can also consider themselves a feminist because the true definition of it is equality. I think the diary does a great job of showing a lady going through everyday life and struggles, as so does the average human being. Throughout the novel, the reader can see that Bridgett is obviously struggling with many issues. Bridget is not pretending to be a heroine in the novel that saves the day, she is meant to be someone we can relate our faults to. From her poor self-image, trying to find a potential partner, and her substance abuse problems, some might say she is a terrible excuse for a feminist. The fact that she wants to better herself, even though she might not take the right route of it, she still wants the best for herself. Her views may be clouded by what society actually wants, but this does not determine whether you can consider yourself a feminist or not. I believe that many people are too wrapped up in the stereotypes about feminism, where they cannot see what it actually stands for, which is very positive and progressive to
... This can be useful to argue against the ultra conservatives that argue against the repression of women. Even as ignorance is portrayed as bliss in the media, in general knowledge is power and can set you free. Towards the end of the film there is a Hijab ceremony that empowers young women and it is a rite of passage into maturity. Even with disconnected threads of thought, the fabric of feminism connects those threads together.
The feminist movement has been faced with backlash arguing that including gendernonconformity in feminism will dilute the movement, cause a weaker front, and feminism is just plain a women’s movement. While the latter is not mainstream today because of third wave feminism and its frontier into intersectionality it can still be seen that with the need to cleanly define identities in order to identify intersectionalities, individuals that are in grey areas are being left
According to the New World Encyclopedia, there is no single idea of feminism. The word feminism encompasses “the social, cultural and political movements, theories and moral philosophies concerned with gender inequalities and equal rights for women.” Unfortunately this is the same word that many people, especially women, do not associate themselves with. The reason why so few women do label themselves is because the English language has misinterpret and misconstrued the central idea of feminism. This is a result from the media, past politics, and feminist themselves who have manipulated the image of feminism.
