This is in memory of John Wesley Powell. John Wesley Powell was born March 24, 1834. He was born in Mount Morris, New York. He lived a full life, he was a solider, scientist, and explorer. He explored many different things for instance he was the first explorer of the Colorado River, also he explored the Grand Canyon. While he was exploring the Grand Canyon three of his men decided to go back, they were killed by Shiviwits part of the Paiute Tribe. He Studied at Illinois Institute and Oberlin College, he studied botany, zoology, and geology. Powell was a professor at Illinois Wesleyan University. In 1861 he enlisted in the Union Army. The Frontier Thesis has been very influential in people’s understanding of American values, government and culture until fairly recently. Frederick Jackson Turner outlines the frontier thesis in his essay “The Significance of the Frontier in American History”. He argues that expansion of society at the frontier is what explains America’s individuality and ruggedness. Furthermore, he argues that the communitarian values experienced on the frontier carry over to America’s unique perspective on democracy. This idea has been pervasive in studies of American History until fairly recently when it has come under scrutiny for numerous reasons. In his essay “The Trouble with Wilderness; or, Getting Back to the Wrong Nature”, William Cronon argues that many scholars, Turner included, fall victim to the false notion that a pristine, untouched wilderness existed before European intervention. Turner’s argument does indeed rely on the idea of pristine wilderness, especially because he fails to notice the serious impact that Native Americans had on the landscape of the Americas before Europeans set foot in America.
In American history, there are numerous people who stand out more and are emphasize more than other in history of our country. One man, John Hancock, is one of those astonishing men that stand out.
Sadly he died a tortured and broken soul because of the ingratitude the country he loved had shown him. His debts were cleared and all his land was paid to his remaining family twenty years after his death, but as was the case with Jim Thorpe's gold medals this was a little too late to show a great man the respect he deserved. When we learn about Revolutionary War history in school, we learn about George Washington, Patrick Henry, and even Nathan Hale. But never is a word spoken about the accomplishments of George Rogers Clark and his small band of soldiers who assisted the East with their victories at Kaskaskia and Vincennes.
Powell's next overseas assignment was in South Vietnam, where he was wounded in action. He then studied at the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, finishing second in a class of more than twelve hundred officers. During a second tour in Vietnam he received the Soldier's Medal for pulling several men from a burning helicopter.
To truly understand the roots of struggle in early America, we must first understand how and where the struggle began. As Skinner describes in her book, the battle that the pioneers fought did not even begin here in America. The pioneers of early America were actually immigrants from such countries as Ireland, Scotland and Germany who came to America in search of independence.
John Hancock was a very influential man for our independence during the War for Independence. He was born in Braintree, Massachusetts, which is now known as Quincy, Massachusetts.1 Different sources had a different birthday listed for him. One source said that it depends on the calendar that was in use at the time, therefore, his birthday is either January 12 or 23, 1737.2 His parents were Mary Hawke Hancock and the senior John Hancock.3 The name “John Hancock” was handed down for three generations making the John Hancock that was influential during the War for Independence the third. Lewis A. Armistead was born on February 18th, 1817 in New Bern, North Carolina. He was brought up in a military family. Their military Despite this he never managed to graduate West Point due to being dismissed twice. Once for hitting a future ally, Jubal Early, over the head with a plate, the other time was due to extensive sickness. But in spite of this he managed to get a position in the army under his father due to his families influential positions in the army. (Confederate General Lewis Armistead is Born) He later suffered from a disease that destroyed skin, lost his farm in a fire, and lost his wife and a four-year old daughter, then remarried. But soon he lost his second wife and another daughter who was only an infant. During the Mexican War though, he was distinguished for abilities under fire. In this war he became close to longtime friend Captain Winfield Scott Hancock. When he decided to join the Confederacy and Hancock joined the Union, The two still attempted to stay friends. American history is accompanied by a long list of explorers who first discovered and who explored the massive continent. All of the explorers had an impact on the development of America. The Lewis and Clark expedition, also known as the Corps of Discovery, stands prominently at the top part of this list. The Lewis and Clark Expedition has had a significant political, social, and economic effect on America. They were the first to map out the west and set off westward expansion. Without the success of the expedition growth of America would have taken five times as long, as predicted by Thomas Jefferson.
David George, a significant person in religious history, was born in 1742 in Essex County, Virginia. He was the son of two African slaves John and Judith. As a young slave, David would fetch water and pick cotton with age he progressed to join the adults in the tobacco and cornfields. His master was a very bad towards his slaves ; George faced many violent situations growing up. He witnessed his mother and brother being beaten. Their slave owner would whip them up to 500 times, after receiving lashes salt and water would be whipped in with a rag. David had also been whipped, “till the blood has run down over my waistband”(Sanneh). George’s greatest grief was watching his mother be beaten and hearing her begging for his mercy. In 1762, at the age of nineteen, driven away by his master he ran away into the ownership of George Galphin in South Carolina. Under new ownership, George now faced a spiritual pace of life for the rest of his life.
Do people look back at the past to hurt themselves or to become a better person? With my very first relationship, we both had a rocky start and bad things happened that we both regret. As time passed by, my significant other chose to learn from the past and wanted to have a better relationship, but I sometimes faltered and looked back at the past that had us going in reverse rather than forward in the relationship. As I learned to accept the past and learn from it, I eventually used the past as a lesson, and I chose to have a stronger and better relationship that is still going on. My story is parallel to that of Cheryl Strayed as she constantly looked back at the past while on her hike on the Pacific Crest Trail that led down a destructive
After being issued by President Thomas Jefferson to map, explore, and compile information on the land just bought through the Louisiana Purchase, Captain Meriwether Lewis and 2nd Lieutenant William Clark set off on one of the greatest expeditions of all time. This paper will explore what adversities were faced on the Corp of Discoveries. From militant Indians to diseases like dysentery, they faced it all. This man, John Hancock, is one of those extraordinary men that stand out.John’s life began on January 16, 1736 in Braintree, Massachuchetts.John was the middle child of three. He was the son of (Rev.) John Hancock, born on June 1, 1702 in Lexington, Massachuchetts and son of Mary Hawke, born on October 13, 1711 in Hingham, Massachuchetts. Mary was once married before she married John Hancock Sr. Her previous marriage ended in her former husband’s death.(Rev.) John Hancock was well-liked by his parish, was paid well, and was provided a very comfortable home. In return of their generosity, he was a "faithful shepard." He kept an attentive watch over the morals and religious well-being of all members of the parish.
John Trudell was born in Ohama, Nebraska on february 15,1946 where he was raised in small towns in Northern Nebraska near the southeast corner of South Dakota. The tribe he associates himself with is the Santee Sioux tribe (Nichols). In 1963, John was 17 years old in high school when he was called up to the principals office and was told that he had a lot of potential but that he needed to study hard to make something of himself. John felt disrespected because he felt like he had already made something of himself so after he left the meeting, he dropped out of school and this is when he joins the U.S. Navy. He served during the early years of the Vietnam War until 1967, where he would then go to college at San Bernadino Valley College in San Bernardino, California to study radio and broadcasting (Nichols). Years after that he will become a Native American Activist while joining two organizations named The Indians of All Tribes and the American Indian Movement.

Pinchot become known at the time as the man who saved U.S. forests. He introduced sustained-yield forestry---cutting no more in a year than the forests could produce new growth. Pinchot’s goal was to show private landowners that they could too can harvest trees without damaging the forest and graze livestock without denuding the range. He is known for reforming the management and development of forests in the U.S. Pinchot believed that it was important for people to depend on natural resources, and conservation must be utilitarian. The conservation movement was movement for all people and all people should control resources, not only few businesses. Pinchot believed in Government interference and regulation. He says, “The obvious and certain remedy is for the government to hold and control the public range until it can pass into hands of settlers who will make their homes upon it” (292). I like that he wants to get everybody’s attention and make them responsible for the future by saying,” The vast possibilities of our great future will become realities only if we make ourselves, in a sense, responsible for the future. The planned and orderly development and conservation of our natural resources is the first duty of the United States” (293).
