The term “dress for success” may have originated in 1975 as the title and subject of a bestselling book by author, John T. Molloy. He also wrote a woman’s version of the book in 1977, and the term “power dressing” also became popular. Molloy’s expertise originated from his initial education research studies that proved that the clothing a teacher wore directly affected their credibility and authority in the classroom. Later, the business world began to pay attention when his strategies were found to increase sales in the field of marketing and also increased the success of lawyers! In 1988, he wrote an updated book because of the ever changing career world. Today, there are even more changes to what dressing for success means. It’s important to understand those changes because there are many reasons that dressing for success is still just as important today. The concept of making a first impression is one of the reasons to “dress for success”. A first impression can only be made once, and the initial impression made is primarily based on appearance.
