This path of independence and solitude may not always be the best option for them or their family, though. Often times it is more beneficial for everyone to work through the problem together. As their land was devastated by the Dust Bowl, deprived farmers were left with few options but to leave. The Grapes of Wrath depicts the journey of the Joads, an Oklahoma based family which decides to move to California in search of better conditions. Coming together as thirteen people at the start, the Joads will undertake what represents both a challenge and their only hope. Among them are only four women embodying every ages: the Grandma, the Mother and her two daughters, the pregnant Rose of Sharon and the young Ruthie. Appearing in Chapter Eight the mother, who is referred to as “Ma”, holds a decisive role in Steinbeck’s novel. She is, along with her son Tom (the main character of the book), present from the early stage of the story until its very end. Further adding strength to his narrative is its similarity to the writing structure of the Bible. His sentences are generally short and often start with the word “And,” just as the books of the Bible do. This makes his tone sound very prophetic, powerful, and forceful. He speaks of “armies of bitterness” that will “walk together and there’ll be a dead terror from it”—forecasting terrible events in the future as if he knew they were going to happen.&nbs and the real thing.

The hopes and dreams of a generation turned to wrath. Steinbeck opens up this catastrophe for public scrutiny.
America, being the richest country in the world would make one assume that all our citizens are living the American dream. Consequently, in this country we address issues such as hunger an inequality, and then never attempt to solve the issues, instead we complain. Helping people who are struggling can be simple, but we fail to approach the issue, and say it is not our problem. If America has all this wealth and none of it is going towards helping our own people out of poverty, the wealth does not mean much. Poverty is not a singular person’s fault, it is our government and economies fault. As a nation, we have chosen to not prioritize helping our own people, and that is where the root of the problem lay. In John Steinbeck’s novel the Grapes of Wrath, characters are stuck in unfortunate circumstances that can be easily corrected if we prioritized helping those who are struggling.

The novel shows how the Joad family deals with moving to California. How they survive the cruelty of the land owners that take advantage of them, their poverty and willingness to work.
