“I hold that a writer who does not passionately believe in the perfectibility of man has no dedication nor any membership in literature”(St. James). By this quote, John Steinbeck is saying that if a writer doesn 't believe that people can be capable of becoming perfect that they should not be writing. John Steinbeck was an American author that wrote in the early twentieth century. He wrote short stories, but he is most known for his novels that depict the lower class of society. His most well known novels are The Grapes of Wrath, Of Mice and Men, and East of Eden. When he was young he didn 't have much friends, so he passed the time by writing. “He started writing short stories at the age of fifteen”(UXL Encyclopedia). Another influence on his writing was from a farm labor organizer who he had interviewed in 1933. He was hiding from the authorities for taking part in a cotton strike in California(UXL Encyclopedia). This impacted Steinbeck to start writing about the lower class of society. John Steinbeck wrote his books during the Great Depression and Dust Bowl era. John steinbeck had a couple of life experiences and time periods that influenced him to write. Steinbeck had unique themes and style in his writing. “Although his subject and style varied with each book, the themes of human dignity and the sense of compassion of what a Time critic called “Steinbeck’s vision of America” remained constant”(Overview). In his books, his attention the detail and social justice gave him a human face to people.(Literary Lifelines 158). Some of those short stories and novels became well known. The first novel Steinbeck wrote was called Cup of Gold. He wrote it at the age of 27, and it wasn 't very successful. Even though it wasn 't successful, the income he received allowed him to keep writing. Steinbeck carried on with writing and eventually one of his books became successful. That book was called Tortilla flat, and was about Mexican-American farmhands(Literary Lifelines 158). One of his most famous short story is called The Pearl. The Pearl was first published in the Woman 's Home Companion under the title of The Pearl of the World(Geismar 151). Of Mice and Men, The Grapes of Wrath, and East of Eden are Steinbeck 's most famous novels. “The success of his later works was due to the essential force and vitality of the writing which often obsured the false sentimental or banal concepts of life”(Geismar 154). Some of his famous books became adapted to the big screen such as Of Mice and Men, The Grapes of Wrath, Tortilla Flat, The Moon Is Down, The Pearl, The Red Pony, East of Eden, and Cannery Row. He wrote a book called Lifeboat that Alfred Hitchcock later directed. He also wrote a book called Viva Zapata! Which was later directed by Elia Kazan(St. James).
