To fully understand the impact John Locke and his economic theories have had on our society, we must observe how they affect us even today despite being formed decades ago. First, look at the theory itself. Locke’s Labor Theory of Value was first published in his Second Treatise of Government, which is a work of political philosophy that he published anonymously in 1689. The labor theory of value basically states that the value of goods/ services comes from the labor conducted to produce them (Vaughn 1978: 313). In other words, the more labor that goes into something, the more worth (by society’s standards) it possesses. This treatise also focused on creating a more civilized society based on natural rights and contract theory.

However, most of the people whose homes were in this area had given their properties up for just compensation by the city without a struggle; only a small portion went to the courts about losing their land. The main reason behind these people taking legal action was because apparently they held a connection to their land; many had spent much time working on their home to bring it to the condition it was, raising its value not only marketably but sentimentally as well (Linder). Essentially, Locke believed we should all be held equally. He insisted that people, not rulers, are sovereign. To use his own words, Locke wrote, “Government can never have a power to take to themselves the whole or any part of the Subjects Property, without their own consent. For this would be in effect to leave them no Property at all.” He makes his point even more explicit: rulers “must not raise Taxes on the Property of the People, without the Consent of the People, given by themselves, or their Deputies.” (Powell 2015). John Locke strongly believed in more rights for the people and was against oppression. In his book, Second Treatise on Civil Government, Locke stated, “(W)e must consider, what state all men are naturally in, and that is, a state of perfect freedom to order their actions, and dispose [manage] of their possessions. . .” (Document A). Locke means every man is naturally equal, no one was created better and he has certain guaranteed rights. This helps society because it would deny a monarch to strip a person of their guaranteed rights and it would make the monarch less powerful and his/her power would be given to the people.

However Hobbes was more harsh and said that as long as you mind your own business and don’t get in the way then you won’t be harmed. John Locke and Adam Smith are both believers that the government should be active in supporting social and political change in the economy. For those who are familiar with John Locke’s social contract should remember that as an individual we give up certain freedoms that we see fit in order to protect our basic rights to life, liberty, and property. If an individual breaks this “contract” then why should they reape its protection. If someone violates the terms of a contract then they lose all that it entails. In Locke’s state of nature, there was never a need to assume that one must equally divide possessions. Locke’s notion of of the right to property was crucial because it was held on the same accord as rights such as life and liberty respectively. By doing so, property becomes subjected to the whims of political processes just as any similar right would require. This means that Locke was able to justify inequalities in property through the need of political regulation for property. There was also a drastic imbalance in Locke’s civil society due to the two classes that unlimited accumulation of property created. Locke suggested that everyone is a member of society and yet only those who owned property could fully participate in society. Those who did not own property were unable to fully participate, because it could give them the opportunity to use their newfound legitimate power to equalize property ownership, going against Locke’s key belief of unlimited accumulation. In this state of nature, according to Locke, men were born free and equal: free to do what they wished without being required to seek permission from any other man, and equal in the sense of there being no natural political authority of one man over another. He quickly points out, however, that "although it is a state of liberty, it is not a state of license," because it is ruled over by the law of nature which everyone is obliged to obey. While Locke is not very specific about the content of the law of nature, he is clear on a few specifics. When analyzing the approach or intentions of the theorists, big dilemmas and questions arise. Such is the case with John Locke and Immanuel Kant, both falling under the concepts of freedom. Locke, having a perspective similar to that of a libertarian’s, argues for rights of possession and limited government intervention, but the difference to his philosophy is that he “does not assert an unlimited right of self-possession” (Sandel 104). In other words, we may not do with our bodies as we please. Locke also argues that an unowned thing becomes your property through the fruit of your labor. In a literal sense, Locke’s theory calls for respect for humanity, but perhaps his biggest problem is the way he proposes his philosophy.
