As of today, serial killers are no longer able to run free from their crimes committed. This happened due to the actions of John E. Douglas and other founding members of the highly esteemed Behavioral Science Unit, now known as the Behavioral Analysis Unit of the FBI. In this unit, founders created a new form of criminal investigation able to predict the actions of a serial killer or assist in finding the killer due to the killer’s psychological behavior. Robert Ressler, John Douglas’ partner in creating the BSU, gave this form of criminal investigation the name of profiling. The terms of serial killer and profiling are now known wide spread throughout the world and present themselves everyday in criminal analysis (Sacred Heart University). Douglas grew up in an environment aware of the rise of the rate of crimes committed around him, specifically induced by his father. By moving from Brooklyn to Hempstead, NY due to his father’s concern for safety, Douglas’ interest in criminal investigation appeared (John Hutzell). Later in Douglas’ life he joined the Air Force and served Amarillo, Texas. When serving in Texas, John Douglas decided to offer handicapped children help by working with them during their recreational programs. This decision triggered Douglas’ interest to go to graduate school. While studying at Eastern New Mexico University, Douglas was offered a four year scholarship in special education by members of the college who took notice of his interest of working with special needs children. Because of this decision, the Air Force discharged Douglas as there was no need for someone with a degree in special education (John Hutzell). However, the most notable way Douglas has lived on has been through media. Many movies and even more television programs have characters created character based off the famous John Douglas and the work he completed within his lifetime. One of the most notable instances of Douglas being portrayed in media is through Agent Jack Crawford, of Silence of the Lambs. Crawford uses profiling throughout the movie to determine who Buffalo Bill may be and solves the case. Going along with this theme, the television show, Hannibal, based of the novel Hannibal, uses both Jack Crawford and another character, Will Graham, who suffers from autoimmune encephalitis. Graham’s character represents the struggle Douglas went through when diagnosed with viral encephalitis. Many television shows have also adopted creating characters off the famous John Douglas. Criminal Minds includes another well known television show to use characters to represent Douglas. Criminal Minds’ first season aired in 2005, and now 13 seasons later, the show continues to dedicate itself to show how the Behavioral Analysis Unit works. The show uses the terms created by Douglas and Ressler in every episode and viewers can see how agents are able to look at murders and other crimes and create a profile to identify the killer.
