John Dewey, an ingenious and significant figure that not only did he teach about philosophy and psychology but other subjects as well. Alongside his difficult personal life, he found a way to teach universities for many years, become an academic philosopher and proponent of educational reform,start an experimental elementary school and publish over a thousand pieces of writings throughout his lifetime.
John Dewey was born in Burlington, Vermont on October 20, 1859.Raised by his father Archibald Dewey and mother, Lucina Artemisia Rich. His best subject was science, which he would later consider to be the highest attribute of the human intellect. Dewey became aware of the world’s ideas during his senior year in high school. Starting to grow up, John Dewey went to public schools in his hometown, overachieving as a student. Being just fifteen years old, he got in the University of Vermont , where he enjoyed studying philosophy. After studying four years, John Dewey graduated from the University of Vermont ranked second within his class.He then got a teaching job in Oil City,Pennsylvania that his cousin was able to give him for two years. After his two years teaching in Pennsylvania, he went back to Vermont and began to teach at a private school, while his fascination and love for philosophy and psychology grew, he decided to take a break and study those subjects at John Hopkins University; where he received his doctorate and became an assistant professor at the University of Michigan,where he met Harriet Alice Chipman and got married in 1886 ,having 6 children and adopting one. Evers argues that such idea didn’t grow fully from john’s head. Since in the nineteenth century, the Romantic era already had some of the ideas that Dewey claims to have. He gives out a list of what progressivism was about. Then he evaluates all these ideas and how they now affect today’s education. However, he analyses the good and the bad , telling that even though it was not all Dewey’s intention to influence in that way, students have to learn the natural way using the tools that were used before it.
