I chose to study Jean-Antoine Houdon’s statue of George Washington. In the 1780’s the Virginia legislature commissioned a statue "to be of the finest marble and the best workmanship,". This indicated they wanted European craftsmanship.

They gave responsibility of selecting the artist to Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin. Together they chose Jeane-Antoine Houdon to do the work. He was one of the world’s premier sculptors at the time.

The artist traveled to the US to work directly off of George Washington. He took measurements of his body and even took a “Life Mask” of his face. The original statue is carved from Carrara marble.
