In recent years pop and rap musicians have been collaborating with many artists that have different musical backgrounds like rock and metal. The new trend nowadays has been an influence from the Middle East with many songs having belly dancing beats in the background. The song I have chosen to discuss is a collaboration between Jay Z and Panjabi MC, the single is called “Beware of the boys” and it features a mixture of bhangra beats and a sample from the '80s hit television show, Knight Rider. The mixture of both sounds is something that had never been heard of before this collaboration and makes for a very interesting song.
Sean Carter or known as Jay Z to his fans is a multy-platinum, world famous rap artist with record sales of over a million, had never previously done anything like this collaboration. Jay and Panjabi MC were hooked up through their managers after Jay heard some of Panjabi’s work while on vacation. Jay brings an American hip hop vibe to the song and on the other hand Panjabi Mc brings bhangra beats. Bhangra is a traditional style of music, whose main components are comprised of the dhol, tumbi and Punjabi lyrics. It is said that Bhangra was started in the 14th or 15th century when farmers would come home after the harvest. After the harvest the farmers would celebrate the long months of hard work with bhangra which meant dancing to drum beats and even singing. The song itself has a very special sound to it, the track starts off in English with Jay Z rapping and then Panjabi MC's lyrics, which are sung in Punjabi the words mean Translated, are a warning to a 16-year-old girl to be leery of guys who are trying to take her innocence.
Upon reading your responses, I can see how individuals are labeled based on race and on stereotypes. In the film, “Boyz n the Hood”, I agree to what Sabrina said about the two scenes expressing discriminatory treatment by the criminal justice system. It was sad to see how when you are in need of help and the only source is turning their backs. It is not fair to be judged by your ethnicity, class, or where you live. This is related to labeling theorist, Howard Becker; whereas he states that certain individuals can even be labeled by being falsely accused. An individual can be labeled as a deviant, because of their race and yet never committed a crime (Adler, Mueller, & Laufer 2013, p. 189). We saw this in the one scene you pointed out, whereas Tre and his dad called the cops because of the break in at their home. Then
In 21st century North America, there is a strange, seemingly-unanimous idea that, to fit the norm, one must be white, Christian and male. While, over the course of the latter 20th century and in the past decade, this has changed, the norm is very much still Christian and male; African-Americans now fit into the “All-American” stereotype, for the most part. However, there are, of course, outliers – deviants from the standard norm; these outliers make one wonder what the norm truly is, why it is so, how did it get to be that way, and what the norm will be in the future. Kanye West's 2004 single titled “Jesus Walks” is written as a ode to Jesus helping him and every other Christian through hard times in their life. Sampling the same beat and background vocals, Lupe Fiasco customizes West's song to fit his own spirituality, in “Muhammad Walks.” Finally, Matisyahu employs his gift of verse and beat-boxing to distribute a rap about his religion, Judaism, over the airwaves and on television. Both Matisyahu and Lupe Fiasco challenge the societal norm of Christianity, while Kanye West solidifies the claim that Christianity is a syncretic religion.
Social psychology is a branch of the spectrum of psychology that primarily focuses on social interactions, environmental influences and the social experiences that weigh heavily on individuals cognitive schemas. The film “Boyz ‘N The Hood” is comprised of many contemporary influential African American actors, heavily influenced by the environment they are in and the violence surrounding them in their community. There are various aspects of the movie that portray social psychological concepts, such as social perception, attitude change, aggression and violence, and group dynamics. Social psychological issues such as proactive aggression, reactive aggression, desensitization, differential association theory, and deviance
Although there is a variety of music that could be examined to trace its evolution through time, there is one genre in particular that is quite interesting to examine. Though it differs from other types of music, it will be looked at in conjunction with Reggae music as they have similar ties. Reggae music is quite prominent today in the United States, parts of Africa, and of course Jamaica. Reggae is notoriously known for its most influential artist Bob Marley, and it is not unusual for one to have heard a few, if not many of his songs. Reggae’s popularity is steadily increasing and is doing so through both expansions of the music as well as increasing knowledge on the genre.
Popular in the united states, the rhythmic music known as rap can be traced back generations to it’s ethnic origins. Centuries before hip hop music existed, the Tribes of West Africa were delivering stories rhythmically, over drums and sparse instrumentation. Connections between tribal story telling virtuals and rap music have been acknowledged by many modern day "tribes", spoken word artists, mainstream news sources, and academics. In the 21st century, rappers rap about their lives and how the place they grew up in was very hard and that is why many people think like rap music so much, because there are many connections rapper can relate to.
What most listeners do not understand is that a lot of hip-hop music is not understandable from the get-go. It takes intense analyzation of lyrics and an open mind to be able to understand what it is really about. Some people can’t understand what is being said just by listening with their ears, and they don’t bother to go study the lyrics. They then leave with the perception that hip-hop is chalk full of, well, nothing. One of the greatest rap lyricists of all time, Shawn Carter, also known as Jay-Z, says, “People don’t bother trying to get it. The problem is that so many people don’t even know how to listen to the music.” Mister Shawn Carter has also said that rap is poetry. He mentioned not to forget that the lyrics in the song were transmitted from feelings, thoughts and emotions to lyrics written on a piece of paper. He went on to say that if you hung that piece of paper up on a wall and someone went up and read it as it was, they’d say, “Wow, this is genius. This is poetry.” McHorter’s opinion on rap can and will be agreed upon by many, many people; however, this conclusion can only be reached without h...
Along with gaining the support of law enforcement officers in the community policing effort, members of the community must also take a stake and become an integral part of the movement. A study noted by Lord, Kuhns and Friday (2009), researchers found that more than 45 million people over the age of 15 encountered the police in some fashion. Of those encounters, one quarter involved members making first contact with police officers. Unfortunately, citizen encounters with law enforcement with negative connotations were more influential to decrease satisfaction with the police than were positive encounters to increase satisfaction (Lord, Kuhns, & Friday, 2009).
Rap Music, a genre of R&B that includes rhythmic poetry put over a musical background. The background consists of beats combined with digitally isolated sound bites from other recordings. The first recording of rap was made in 1979 and the genre began to take notice in the U.S. in the mid-1980s. Though the name rap is often used back and forth with hip hop. The name hip-hop comes from one of the earliest phrases used in rap on the song “Rapper’s Delight” by Sugarhill Gang. “I said a hip hop, hippie to the hippie, the hip, hip a hop, and you don't stop, a rock it to the bang bang boogie, say, up jump the boogie, to the rhythm of the boogie, the beat.”. In addition to rap music, the hip-hop subculture also formed other methods of expression like break dancing, graffiti art, a unique slang vocabulary, and fashion sense.
They went further to add that young officers want to get out there chase suspects, makec arrest, and move from call to call, “do the adredaline stuff.” Community policing allows the officers to get together with other officers of other shifts to workout a plan to address the issues of certain neighborhoods (Gardiner, 96, 2016). It’s a strategy that allows officers to be more proactive among the community, instead of just responding to calls. Furthermore, it provides officers with the ability to meet the citizens needs and what they view as important (Gardiner, 110,
There are many forms of childhood maltreatment. All of which can and do cause both physical and mental issues to the victims. Childhood physical abuse can cause grave physical injuries and even death. Children who are physically abused are more likely to experience cognitive, emotional, and behavioral problems as they grow up, such as depression, anxiety, misbehavior, substance abuse problems, and can grow up to be abusers themselves. Many people have a hard time understanding why anyone would hurt a child. Most abusers love their children, but they have less patience then other parents. But the truth is that many children learn violent behavior from their parents and then grow up to be abusers themselves. There is evidence that physical child
was well organized, efficient and effective. She was compliant with 83% of the new plan regimen by the end of the four weeks project. She was also in compliant of her weekly weight regimen and documentations throughout the course of the project. Even though C.M skipped imputing some caloric intake and meal times in her journal, at the end, she was able to achieve 90 % compliance of healthy eating through label reading food planning and the use of the national dietary guidelines. She was also able to reduce her intake of fast foods noted by a marked reduction in weight of 7 lbs. at the end of the third week. While C.M made a lot of progress in most of the itemized plan of care, she was non-compliant in the area of meeting with a nutritional counsellor. She attributed this to lack of time and financial
Community policing, as much as many people frown upon it, is an important job which requires police officers to respond to many problems in the community by a simple call. In order for a police to be effective in the community, this officer must be able to possess skills needed to work together with the community to solve problems. “Community policing is defined as involving three key components: developing community partnerships, engaging in problem solving, and implementing community policing organizational features.” (What Is Community Policing?, n.d.) There are many controversy surrounding the job of a police officer. Many officers are frequently associated with over using their powers when certain situations occur.
Physical abuse is one of the most common forms of child maltreatment. It can begin as soon as conception and includes any deliberate act of violence that is meant to injure or kill a child. (Encarta 1) Over 500,000 children are physically harmed each year. In 1991, 25% of American adults admitted to being beat by a parent or a caretaker in their youth and unfortunately the numbers have increased since then. (Shepard 305) ...
Studies have documented the connection between abuse and a range of physical, emotional mental and behavioral problems. Child abuse comes with tragic consequences and the society also pays a high monetary cost. The cost for child abuse includes both direct costs (those associated with the immediate needs of the abused child) and indirect costs (those associated with the long term and secondary effects). Importantly, since some forms of child abuse goes unrecognized, and it is difficult to determine how much abuse has taken place and, it is therefore not possible to determine the actual cost of child abuse. (Briere, 1992).
You see hip-hop dancing everywhere, from television and YouTube to social parties and gatherings. This form of dance is commonly recognized in our modern American society, but where did it all start? Hip-hop dancing started in the 1970s in New York City, where the first professional street-based dance crews formed. Around the time, young dancers would hit the parties and mimic the moves that were seen by dance crews and on the streets. Clive Campbell, better known as DJ Kool Herc, played an instrumental role in the birth of this dance form. Campbell, a Jamaican, was a regular DJ at local teenage parties in the Bronx. He studied dancers and zeroed-in on the fundamental break instrumental gap in the song when dancers really went wild, the break. Dancers were able to fully express themselves in the break, and they found inspiration through the music, which was filled with stylized, upbeat rhythms, and it allowed them to ‘break’ to the beat. These young dancers would eventually earn the name ‘b-boys’ (or ‘b-girls’), also known as ‘break dancers’. Throughout the 70’s, it was common to walk down the streets of New York City and see a big boom box, cardboard, and someone b-boying to the music.
