I will analyze the show Jane the Virgin. This show seems to be popular with my age group currently and I would like to delve deeper into the shows themes as well as the messages it puts out. I have enjoyed the show Jane the Virgin from its release in 2014. Back in that time I was still a high school student and was intrigued by the show’s themes and openness regarding sexaulity. I had never heard a lot about many of the topics discussed in the show. My sexaul education was very basic and I found myself entranced by the new information the show offered me. I loved how powerful the women of the show were and how they faced the crazy challenges presented to them. After about a year of not watching the show I resumed watching it this fall. The show is developed by Jennie Snyder Urman and airs on The CW. Jane the Virgin contains a pretty diverse cast by my standards and as a young high schooler I appreciated seeing people who looked similar me on the screen. As stated in The Atlantic, Jane the Virgin was the only show in 2015 on network television to have a predominantly Latino cast. I have always appreciated that this show has diverse characters that were central to the story line. The show did not seem throw a diverse character out of a fear they were lacking in diversity. I noticed that this show doesn't see diversity as a rule to be begrudgingly followed, but instead as a tool to enhance the story. Whenever I watch this show I feel inspired by the lead actress, who is a Latina. When I was little I rarely saw women of color on screen and instead adopted Barbie as my idol. I wondered when my blond hair and blue eyes would come in and my skin would finally bleach itself lighter. My young mind did not piece together the fact that I would never be white; I only really saw white people on television and just assumed that darker skinned children eventually grew up to be white. This might be one of the reasonsons I appreciate this show in so much. I hope that children might see a poster of this show or watch this actress in other shows and feel beautiful in their own skin.
