Ernest J. Gaines uses fiction in The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman to write a history of the African American life from 1861 to 1961. Jane was a young African American slave involved in war. The violent history of slavery portrays so many aspects of American history. This novel takes place during the Civil Rights Movement. In“ The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman,” themes such as slavery, discrimination, and the Civil rights progression are a few of the historical occurences that take place. This book practically covers her whole life story going from her childhood when she was still in slavery to when the war was going to her sons life to where she is now. Miss Jane Pittman is an outstanding epic graced with humor and founded in the lessons of overcoming misfourtunes either through battles or resilience. As a novel itself it is beautifully written in a lyrical prose with extravagant, revealing dialogue.
. Ernest’s early years built him into a strong character. It sculpted him to handle harsh or extreme situations. Ernest was forced to do labor on a plantation, ironically, Ernest’s ancestors were raised on the same plantation that he was. Ernest’s Parents were separated when he was young. He was part of the fifth generation of his family to be raised there. He was lifted by his impaired aunt. At the young age of nine he began picking cotton, and he was a student for approximately five to six months out of the year. (“ Twentieth century American literature”).
Ernest headed south in hopes to start a new life, as many African Americans did. Story telling helped Ernest to overcome rough times and eventually led him to success. Ernest’s stones won him entrance to Stanford University. (“ Twentieth century American lite...

A recurring theme throughout Gaines' fiction is the search for dignity and masculine identity in a hostile, racist environment. Although he consistently celebrates the pride and dignity of African Americans, he has often been critiqued by black writers who feel that his works do not adequately portray the harsh realities of black life. In Ernest J Gaines autobiography “ Miss Jane Pitman” slavery, the civil rights movement, and discrimination are themes portrayed. Gaines listened to adults tell stories and wrote letters for those who could not write. Gaines’s aunt was his inspiration for the character of Miss Jane. Gaine looks at the people, not the issue. In this novel we are exposed to the life of Africans through out the civil war. Gaines is a well-regarded man and is much in demand as a public speaker and correspondent on American life.
