The main theme in the book Jane Eyre is the injustice of a rigid class structure and how it can get in the way of one’s happiness. The underlying message of this book, is that no matter how hard your life gets and no matter what people tell you, fight for what is right and live life freely and equally among others. This is the theme because, you should never have to sufferer when you didn’t do anything wrong. The author is trying to tell everyone that you should fight for what is right and live life filled with as much happiness as you deserve. In The beginning of the book Jane is a young orphan that is mistreated by her aunt and her cousins. She is unable to control her emotions and attacks her cousin when he was picking on her. When she was falsely accused to be a liar in front of her schoolmates, she was able to control her rage, eventually justice was served and it was revealed that she was falsely accused. This showed that if you deal with a situation calmly and peacefully you will get a good result. Throughout the book Jane searches for a place in the world where she belongs, where she is wanted and loved. While at Lowood, she tells Helen that “to gain some real affection from you, or Miss Temple, or any other whom I truly love, I would willingly submit to have the bone of my arm broken, or to let a bull toss me, or to stand behind a kicking horse, and let it dash its hoof at my chest” (Bronte, 104) This shows how much she values others affection towards her, to the point where she is willing to harm herself to obtain it. Jane has to face the conflict of gender roles and her social standing to peruse her happiness. When she was a governess at Thornfield she fell in love with Rochester, the owner of Thornfield manner.
