Even though athletes get special treatment they never think about how them getting off easy can back fire. The Ray Rice case is a prime example of how it was a downfall in their career. Rice got released from the Baltimore ravens and since then he has not play football. The NFL suspended him indefinitely, but it was later lifted because he did not lie to the commissioner about the domestic violence case. He was free to play again, but no team signed him because it was going to come with a ton of backlash and no team wanted to deal with that because it would have been a distraction to the team. The NFL has multiple reasons for maintaining a tough drug policy. Former NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle stated that serious health problems occur for players who abuse drugs. Additionally, since the NFL is a billion dollar business, they have an interest in maximizing productivity from its players and alcohol abuse hinders that. It says in the Marquette Sport Law Journal, “The league has an interest in protecting the safety of all players” (Sisson and Trexell 11). Players who abuse alcohol or any drug for that matter put themselves and other players at risk. In 2012, Dallas Cowboy defensive tackle Josh Brent killed his teammate while driving under the influence of alcohol. He was released by the team three weeks after the incident and does not play in the NFL anymore. There are numerous incidents of players getting into trouble because of alcohol.

Lack of certainty in the research makes deontological ethics more difficult to implement. Since the research did not directly related football to the brain injuries, there is not the same obligation to disclose research that is not definite. Parallel to if the information was conclusive the NFL fell into the ethical traps of money and conflict of interest. The NFL still had to wrestle with ethical traps even if the it was considered ethical to not disclose the research.
