Gender equality: the state in which access to rights or opportunities is unaffected by gender. Now, this is a status that every great country strives for. Through research and basic observation It’s easy to figure out that we (The United States) still haven’t reached this status. This fact proves more true for countries that are less fortunate and developed as us such as Africa. The question is how are we going to provide social, educational, reproductive, and other basic liberties to women all around the world in “developed” countries and in “undeveloped” countries. In the letter “Our big bet for the future” Bill and Melinda Gates discuss the issue of the discrepancies of women receiving education, proper health care, necessities, and luxuries compared to men. They provide startling statistics showing that “In Africa, women are 24 percent less likely than men to own a cell phone; in South Asia, it’s 37 percent”(Bill and Melinda Gates 23). What some people call nuances of inequality others may call, rightfully so, evidence of the underlying sense of contrived equality that we live in. Discrepancies in pay, societal expectations, and reproduction rights all prove that even though we live in one of the most progressive and powerful countries; our female citizens still have to suffer unjust treatment and expectations. “ Recent reports on women's wages in the U.S. say they were 76.5 percent of men's wages” (Besen-Casino 6).
