Throughout the novel Holden evolves to have the feeling of being needed by those around him. He comes to a sense of conclusion that he must help those around him, he must be the ‘catcher in the rye.’ This conclusion really arises after the loss of James Castle. Due to the admiration, he holds of James Castle, and the fact of Holden feeling helpless during the act of James’ death. Holden feels helpless because of the fact that he can hear everything that is going on yet, still can not help him. “I was in the shower and all, and even I could hear him land outside” (170).
