Every television throughout the world is plastered with the news that a twenty-year-old mentally ill man named, Adam Lanza shot 20 children between the ages of six and seven years old and shot six adult staff members, yet before arriving at the school he shot his mother. Any explanation for his actions? We have none because he committed suicide by shooting himself in the head. February 14, 2018. Breaking News. But why? Why after all these massacres has nothing been done? Nickolas Jacob Cruz, the suspect in the High School shooting, why did he do what he had done? A CBS article mentions that Cruz, legally purchased the AR-15 a year ago and that he had been living with another family due to the death of his mother. Vanessa Burton, a former classmate, mentions that Cruz didn’t really have any friends and that he preferred to be alone, she also mentioned that “He just liked hurting things.” Burton continues to mention several other actions of Cruz, that resembles someone who is mentally suffering, such as, jumping in front of a moving car, hurting animals, and getting kicked out of two schools including Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Howsepian, Dr. Swanson, and Gilbert predicted that individuals with mental illness do tend to be more violent, and now this raises the question of, do individuals need to be screened for illnesses in order to purchase or own a gun? Personally, I think yes. You never know whom you are selling a gun too, so why not protect the country as a whole? After this incident has occurred, I instantly thought on my own life. I have a sister who goes to elementary school, what if something like this will happen because we don’t have laws to enforce gun control, why take that unnecessary risk, when two words can prevent future circumstances. Should teachers have firearms? It definitely is. My sister's school has two NYPD School Safety officers with no firearms, so I think in case of an emergency that they will be able to prevent it? No. These children that keep getting harmed are the future so why not put 110% into protecting them? Gun control in the United States, needs a solution, at the moment it is an open file. Research has shown that nine states have added or expanded background checks, twenty states have strengthened their gun laws, nineteen states passed laws to improve the databases. Slowly by slowly, the United States is strengthening its gun laws, but at the same time, more lives are being taken from innocent
