Dan Gutman’s Jackie and Me takes place in Brooklyn, New York. This is a place where mostly whites were racist towards African Americans because of the time period. A boy named Joe Stoshack, and a baseball star Jackie Robinson faced segregation. In order to overcome racism, smartness, humbleness, and drive are the keys to success. One lesson readers can learn from Jackie and Me is that in the story men and women judge people before they get to know them. Dan Gutman wanted to enforce to readers that “Every human being is the same because that is how God made us.” In the beginning of the story, the dialogue shows how Rachel Robinson reacts to getting fired from her job. Rachel’s boss believes that the customers that come to the restaurant don’t like her because of her skin color. “Rachel I am sorry, you are going to have .I have been working hard at my job?” This …show more content…

People might say that Racism is a part of life in history and you have to deal with it, but it fails the support because back in the day, there was a thing called the middle passage and was very harmful. The middle passage was where people chained slaves to the bottom of a ship and barely fed them and they also went to the bathroom on themselves. The theme is racism is not acceptable and can cause a lot of issues between human beings. Jackie Robinson was a person who was humble and treated all humankind equally. In conclusion, the theme of the book is, people of another race tend to do and say hurtful and discouraging things. These events showed how each character reacted towards everything. This book could be based on the famous quote: “It ain’t about hard you can hit, it’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward” (Rocky Balboa- Sylvester Stallone). A duty officer requested this and then later he requested that Jackie should be court martialed. Since this happened Jackie was not allowed to be deployed overseas to the World War II. He never saw combat during the war. Jackie left the Army with an honorable discharge.
