In William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, his antagonist, Jack Merridew, transforms from a wanna-be autocratic leader to a drunk-with-power chief. As Jack undergoes these changes, he learns that human beings all have the capacity to succumb to savage intentions and behaviors.
The first impression of Jack suggests that he will be a power-hungry leader who wants to prove to the other kids that he can be a leader. After Jack’s failed attempt to kill the pig “He snatched his knife out of the sheath and slammed it into the tree trunk. Next time there would be no mercy” (31).
