There are many different organized crime groups within all different locations in the United States, and they are all known for many different reasons. The Italian American mafia is a very well know organized crime group within New York City. After the death of Giuseppe Masseria in the Casellammarese War, Salvatore Maranzano initiated the organization of the “Families” in 1931. Maranzano introduced the now-familiar mafia hierarchy: boss (capofamiglia), underboss (sotto capo), advisor (consigliere), captain (caporegime), soldier (soldato), and associate; and declared himself capo di tutti capi (boss of all bosses). The Lucchese family ran clothing and trucking companies and owned several buildings in downtown New York City. The Lucchese family controlled the union of needle trades for clothes manufacturing. For meat companies on of the bosses of the Lucchese crime family, Giovanni Dioguardi merged consumer Kosher Provisions Company and American Kosher Provisions Inc. together, making him able to control a large portion of the Kosher food market, forcing supermarkets to buy from his companies at his prices. While for food distribution they controlled the hunts point cooperative market in the Bronx. The family-controlled freight in and out of John F. Kennedy, LaGuardia and Newark Liberty airports. On December 11th 1978, associates of the Lucchese crime family robbed a Lufthansa plane of over $5 Million dollars, which is estimated at over 20 million dollars after inflation.
