Recommended: Children and war effects

After Ishmael returns to Freetown, Sierra Leone, After help from the RUF and the military leaves the civilian government, and the war Ishmael has been avoiding catches up with him. After his uncle's death, Ishmael flees Sierra Leone for neighboring Guinea and eventually makes his way to his new life in the United States.
The theme of this book was courage because it took a lot of strength to do what Ishmael did. Ishmael and his friends show courage on the decisions they had to make and the way they proceed deaths. If i was in their time i wouldn't be able to survive what they went through. The theme is to value of my friends also because in this war his friends always had his back, thats how my friends are. The point of view of this story has to first person, The reason for this answer is because the boy soldier was Ishmael himself, for example he used I in the book. Also the author states that he wrote it himself. The plot was that the rebels decided to conquer other peoples villages. The resolution was him trying to remember what happened once his whole family is killed. People from the United Nations started gathering all the young boy soldiers including Ishmael to be in rehabilitation. The setting in this story is in Sierra Leone, Africa. Ishmael traveled all over from Kabati, Mattru Jong, Kamatorn and much more until the end where he ends up in Freetown. analysis I have really enjoyed reading this book made by Ishmael because it tells how life has its twists and turns and their adventures through villages and trying to escape death. The characters in this book show how you really do have real friends and that a society can form and shape who you're or who you could be. My favorite character would have to be Ishmael Beah bec...

...ent day and people need help. Now to end my analysis Ishmael lived a bad life but before the war, he enjoys a happy childhood in his village. During the war,Ishmael is forced to become a super natural killing machine capable of horrible acts of violence, Without having sleep and comfort from another living organism. Ishmael then he tries his best to not get killed after having a loaded mechanical weapon at the reach of his hands. Later on in the story,When the UNICEF rescues Ishmael the boy soldier from the front lines of war, Ishmael is rehabilitated to get all the drugs from his body removed, That helped him stay up and taken to therapy so he can remember his old life and do good. Ishmael later moved to New York and made his own book, Now he gives advice to kids and teaches others about real life, When he was a boy soldier and how to move in certain situations.

In order to escape the perils and trials of war, Ishmael loses his innocence as he transitions from a child who liked to rap with his friends to a cold blooded solider in the army during the civil war in Sierra Leone. Through his transition, Ishmael is forced to resort to the addiction of drugs such as cocaine, marijuana, and “brown-brown” just so that he, along with the other members of the child army can have the courage to be able to kill their fellow countrymen and slaughter entire towns who stand in their paths. In order to portray his struggles in the army, Ishmael uses the dramatic elements of memories explained using flashback, dialogue, and first-person narration in order to establish the theme of the memoir being how war causes for a child to lose its innocence. The transition shown in the memoir illustrates how the title of the novel, A Long Way Gone, was chosen because it demonstrates how he is a long way gone psychologically, emotionally, and physically, from the child that he was when the memoir begins to the soldier that he is forced to become.
