In 1889, Isabel Hampton Robb was the first selected superintendent of nurses at John Hopkins Hospital and was also the principal of its training school for nurses. While serving there as a superintendent, she organized a group of fewer than 20 nurses in order to form a national professional organization for nurses. As the result, on September 2, 1896, the Nurses' Associated Alumnae of the United States and Canada was created, but in 1911 the organization was renamed as the American Nurses Association. Isabel Robb had a huge impact on the nursing profession through her ethical behavior and principles that she applied display crucial roles in the hospital environment because it gave nurses’ a better understanding of nursing as a whole.

So in 1965, the ANA demonstrated their support for the Social Security Amendments of 1965, which was passed and is known as Medicare and Medicaid. These programs provide insurance coverage for the elderly and poor families. The American Nurses Association continues to demonstrate their support today with the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and making sure that millions of Americans have healthcare coverage, receive quality care and low cost of care. The ANA is strongly opposed to the newly introduced American Health Care Act that was proposed by Donald Trump in order to repeal Obamacare. The ANA President Pamela F. Cipriano commented on the Graham-Cassidy-Heller-Johnson proposal that was given by the Senate stating that it is the worst. According to her, “this proposal limits care for those that need it most and fuels greater uncertainty in the insurance market. It poses a serious threat to patients’ care, especially those that need coverage for illnesses or pre-existing conditions” (Byrd). They are very cooperative in the reform decision and will show support for the change if it benefits the patients and the nurses because they positive consequences of the health care decisions that are made. This not only displays concern for patients but also beneficence because they try to do good for the people, the association attempts to fight for patients’ rights and the guarantee of access to healthcare to everyone without discrimination. When I become as nurse, I will join this organization because this is the largest organization, that would represent my interests in taking better care of my patients and letting my voice make a difference. For example, in situations where hospitals do budget cut downs, by reducing qualified nurses and replacing them with LPNs, this decision can lead to a negative effect on the patient.
