He also knows that Gatsby earned his money in a shady way, which is one reason that he dislikes people who are not in the so-called “dominant race.” Tom implies that if Gatsby marries Daisy, the “ring” he buys her will be “stolen,” which suggests getting acquired by doing something illegal.
