What are the differences between heros and villains? A hero is someone who is willing to fight to the death to help someone else. A villain is soeone who will do bad at any cost, whether someone gets hurt or not. The epic poem, The Odyssey, has both heros and villains. The Odyssey is about a king named Odysseus who is fighting his way home to get back to his wife, and son, while fighting monsters and obsticals. The main character, Odysseus, could be considered botha hero and a villain because, he fights hard to get home while being brave, and determaned, but he kills along the way at no cost which makes him a villain. Therefore, Odysseus is mostly a monster because he could have let all of the people go and not kill them. First, Odysseus acts like a hero because he is trying to get home from the battle of troy, and is trying to act like a role model. Some of the negative qualities Odysseus possesses are anger and selfishness. One time Odysseus acts angerly is when he kills all of the suiters and the maids from his home. “Even if you were to give me all in the world, I will not stop till I have paid you all in full” (Homer 182). Basically, Odysseus is being bad here because he is in a way thretining all of the suiters. Addictionaly, this shows Odysseus is a bit of a “monster” because he is going to kill all of these men for the things that could have been replenished. Next, Odysseus shows selfishness when he leaves his men to die from the Sylla, and leaves. “So send three of my men to find out what sort of people live here” (Homer 90). Essencialy, Odysseus is being bad here by making others do his dirty work so he won’t get killed. Therefore, Odysseus shows selfishness and anger, which are both qualities that could be considered

Hubris, or excessive human pride, is most detested by the gods and likewise is most punishable by them. The Odyssey is a story about Odysseus and Telemachus, two heroes who throughout their adventures meet new people and face death many times. Telemachus goes to find his father after he learns from Athena that he is still alive. The two meet, and Odysseus attempts to go back to Ithaca after he was lost at sea, and on his way there becomes one of the most heroic characters in literature as we know it. Like all heroic characters, Odysseus began to display hubris as he learned how true of a hero he was. James Wyatt Cook, a historian and an expert on The Odyssey, wrote about how hubris can affect the characters that display it. He says, “Because Homer’s Odyssey is essentially comic, that episode [opened wind bag destroys ship] is only one of a series of setbacks Odysseus experiences before reaching his home in Ithaca and recovering his former kingdom and his family. Such, however, is not the case for those who display hubris with tragic outcomes.” (Cook 1) Initially, Odysseus learns about Aias who died as a cause of the excessive pride he portrays.
