Recommended: Prince hamlet as a victim of the fate

Hamlet the Prince of Denmark is a novel written by William Shakespeare. William Shakespeare is known for his tragedies. Hamlet the Prince of Denmark is most known for its quote, “To be, or not to be?” Within the novel, the question that is prominent throughout the story is if Hamlet really crazy or is he just acting crazy. Hamlet desperately wants to avenge King Hamlet, and to get his revenge, he has to act crazy, but is he really acting? In the novel, Hamlet elucidates to how someone can spiral out, and go crazy.
There can be many reasons why Hamlet comes across as crazy. The start of Hamlet’s madness could come from mourning over King Hamlet’s death for so long or having his mother, Gertrude telling him to stop mourning over his father.
He feels that if he can trick these people into thinking he’s crazy then they’re not going to find him suspicious. Hamlet desperately feels the need to kill Claudius for killing his father. “The Mouse Trap”(Act 3, Sn. 2, Ln. ). After the play when Hamlet got the reaction he wanted from Claudius “Give me some light. Away!”(Act 3,Sn. 2,Ln. 295), Hamlet figures this is his time to strike on Claudius,but he wants to kill him when he creating a sin, “When he is drunk asleep, or in his rage”(Act 3, Sn. 3, Ln. 94). So when Hamlet thought that Claudius was hiding, while he was talking with his mother without hesitation, he stabs at the person who is hidden and accidentally kills Polonius thinking it was Claudius, “How now, a rat? Dead for a ducat, dead! (stabs his sword through the arras and kills POLONIUS)” (Act 3, Sn. 4, Ln. 24). Hamlets acting being crazy seems to have actually made him go crazy. Hamlet didn’t even know who was hiding before he went and killed Polonius. The question is has Hamlet gone crazy from the mourning of his father’s death, thoughts about suicide, and wanting to kill someone? Furthermore, insanity can be the theme driven for this novel.     The reasoning behind Hamlet’s madness is the investigation that occurs with the cause of his father’s death. As Hamlet recognizes the truth associated with his father’s death, he realizes the death was committed by murder. This is revealed in act one, scene five, as his father’s ghost explains that Claudius poisoned him (1.5.64-80). In addition, the circumstances concerning the marriage of Claudius and Gertrude enhances Halmet’s urge to act mad. Claudius believes that Hamlet is mad, although he does not know the reason for why he is mad. This allows for Hamlet to create a plan to kill Clausius without many questions being asked. In act two, Hamlet admits that he can alter his madness: “I am but mad north-north-west. When the wind is southerly I know a hawk from handsaw” (2.2.390-391). With this information, the suggestion is that Hamlet is clever in the way he acts. During the beginning of the play, some of the characteristics of Hamlet are identified. The explanation of Hamlet being a student and attending university provides the audience with information that as a character, Hamlet has an abundance of knowledge.
