You bring to light the endurance and strength of those of Judaism. The mere attempt of Hitler to exterminate all Jews with the destruction of six million in Europe is unimaginable. In a previous nursing class my group presented a power point on Irena Sendler who was “The Angel of the Warsaw Ghetto”. She was a holocaust rescuer who saved over 2500 children using different methods to hide them, while helping them escape the camps. It was devastating to read stories of the mothers allowing Irena to take their children knowing they will never see them again. She was captured and tortured but refused to give pertinent information and was sentenced to die. She impacted society by preserving future generations of Jews who had gone to become doctors,
I decided to watch the testimony of Sally Roisman, a holocaust survivor. Sally had a strictly orthodox family, with a mother, father, and 10 siblings. Their family owned a textile mill which made dresses and suits. Sally attended a Jewish girls school but didn’t get the chance to finish her education before her school was closed down. Her teachers said very good things about her and that made her and her mother happy. Sally later returned and studied to finish school after the war. She still studies to make up for her loss today. Her family lived in an apartment complex were 15 families lived. 50% of the families were Jews in the complex.
In researching testimony, I chose to write about Eva Kor’s experience during the Holocaust. Eva and her family were taken to Auschwitz II- Birkenau from a Ceheiu which was a Romania ghetto in the 1940’s. Eva’s story starts out in Port, Romania where she was born and raised with her family before the Holocaust. Eva’s family consisted of her twin sister Miriam,two older sisters Aliz and Edit, and her parents Alexander and Jaffa. The last time Eva saw her father and sisters were when they arrived in Auschwitz after exiting the train. Eva and Miriam were with their mother until a man asked if they were twins.Their mother said yes, after asking if that was a good thing and then they were taken away never to see her again. Once taken away, they were brought to a barrack for twins where they were kept for Mengele to conduct experimentations.

An entire chapter of Eric Liu’s memoir, The Accidental Asian, is founded on the supposition that Jews today serve as a metaphor for assimilation into American culture. According to Liu, this is due to the ease with which Jews have been able to assimilate. However, the progress that Jews have made in embracing and affecting America has been gradual rather than instantaneous, as evidenced by the character Sara Smolensky in Anzia Yezierska’s novel Bread Givers. Sara is not the symbol of an assimilated Jew, but instead represents a period of transition between complete assimilation into American identity and complete dissimilation from her Jewish and Polish heritage, neither of which she can fully accomplish. Her identity was both “made” and “unmade” by her interaction with America, and she is left struggling for a new self that can interweave her ancestral past and her American present.
There are many heroic individuals in history that have shown greatness during a time of suffering ,as well as remorse when greatness is needed, but one individual stood out to me above them all. He served as a hero among all he knew and all who knew him. This individual, Simon Wiesenthal, deserves praise for his dedication to his heroic work tracking and prosecuting Nazi war criminals that caused thousands of Jews, Gypsies, Poles and other victims of the Holocaust to suffer and perish.
In conclusion, I feel that I gained a better understanding of the Holocaust. I also learned to manage my time during research days. I feel that this project was a great step towards high school and its many long and difficult assignments. I feel that I have done a good job and put forth a great effort in this assignment. I hope all of my hard work will pay off not only with a good grade but with a new knowledge and understanding of the Holocaust. I believe I will come away from this with great sense of accomplishment and relief.
Gerda Weissmann Klein’s personal account of her experiences during Germany’s invasion of Poland and of the Holocaust illustrated some of the struggles of young Jewish women at the time in their endeavors to survive. Weissmann Klein’s recount of her experiences began on September 3, 1939, at her home in the town of Bielitz, Poland, just after Nazi troops began to arrive and immediately enforce their policies on Polish Jews. With the spread of the Nazi’s “national community” or Volksgemeinschaft ideology in the 1930s, came strict definitions from the Nazi party of what it meant to be German. Opposing the independent “new women” promoted in the 1920s by the Weimar Republic, the Nazi’s idea of womanhood was centered around creating a strong nation by pushing women to be mothers and maintain the household. In this way, those mothers could raise strong soldiers that could serve and protect Nazi Germany. While in contrast, Elsa Herrmann description of a “new woman” in a 1929 book, describes a woman focused on the present and actions such as entering the workforce. Adolf Hitler was a German. He got arrested for doing ilegal things within the government of Germany. After Hitler was free from prison he went back to work in the government of Germany. Hitler slowly made his way through the German government. While worked his way to the top he created laws and changed things to make everything he was going to do legal. Once Hitler made it to the top he started to kill Jews and other undesirables. Hitler wanted all the Jews and all the other undesirables gone he wanted to make them suffer. He had made the plan of the Holocaust to get rid of the undesirables.
The Warsaw Ghetto was a Jewish-populated ghetto in the largest city of Poland, Warsaw. A ghetto can be defined as a part of a city in which large quantities of members of a minority group live, especially because of social, legal, or economic pressure. Ghettos were commonly attributed to a location where there was a large Jewish population. In fact, the word Ghetto originated from the name of the Jewish quarter in Venice, Italy, in 16th century.The Warsaw Ghetto was the largest Ghetto, as a part of the Holocaust, and as an early stage of it, played a very significant role. After their introduction to the hate that individuals can possess, and in losing many of their loved ones and friends, the survivors felt it necessary to share their legacies with the world, for this occurrence reveals their truth strength and determination.
Regine Donner, a famous Holocaust survivor, once said, “I had to keep my Jewishness hidden, secret, and never to be revealed on penalty of death. I missed out on my childhood and the best of my adolescent years. I was robbed of my name, my religion, and my Zionist idealism” (“Hidden Children”). Jewish children went through a lot throughout the Holocaust- physically, mentally, and emotionally. Life was frightening and difficult for children who were in hiding during the rule of Adolf Hitler.
I've thought, and thought about resistance in the Holocaust and I've come to this realization: No words or poem or detailed description can describe the level of terror and oppression that took place. I am simply going to try my best to understand a fraction of the pain that many people went through, and the lessons we can learn from what happened.

One of the greatest, most selfless women in the history of the Holocaust passed away on Monday, May 12th of 2008. A kindhearted Polish woman, she helped 2,500 infants and children escape from the Warsaw Ghetto (Snopes, par. 2) while working undercover as a health worker (Irena Sendler, par. 2). Irena Sendler was an admirable woman who was able to discover children in the Warsaw Ghetto, sneak them out and get them to safety.
