Critical Reading Portfolio

Section 1: Significance of title
The Invisible man relates to the world’s perception of the narrator, a black man. When people see him they project stereotypes onto him. He is also able to go unnoticed in many situations actually being an invisible man such stealing electricity for his light bulbs or when he bumps into the man while walking.

Section 2: Author
The author of The Invisible Man is Ralph Ellison. While writing the book Ellison was extremely angry with Communist party leaders betraying African Americans, This was also the inspiration for the novel. Ellison also stated that the book was written as an experimental form of protest rejecting social protest.

Section 3: Setting
The narrator is reared in the southern United States, later moving to New York in the 1930’s the time period is very important to the novel because at that time there was a lot of racial tension and racism in the United States. The location of the novel is also very important; one of the main subjects is the huge difference in racial freedom of the south compared to the north.

Section 4: Plot
Invisible Man is the story of a black man from the South who does not fully understand racism in the world. Excited for the future he heads to college but ends up getting expelled after showing a white benefactor old slave quarters. He moves to Harlem and becomes a speaker for a Communist party, known as the Brotherhood. In this position he is swept up in a world he does not fully understand. As he works for the organization, he encounters many people and situations causing him to slowly come to terms with his identity. As racial tensions in Harlem continue to build, he gets cau...

But more than that, he was the example of everything I hoped to be: Influential with wealthy men all over the country; consulted in matters concerning the race; a leader of his people; the possessor of not one, but two Cadillacs, a good salary and a soft, good-looking and creamy-complexioned wife. What was more, while black and bald and everything white folks poked fun at, he had achieved power and authority; had, while black and wrinkle-headed, made himself of more importance in the world than most Southern white men. They could laugh at him but they couldn't ignore him… (4.14) This quote shows the innocents and naivety of the narrator prior to learning everything Dr. Bledsoe is willing to do for his job.
Section 10: Response
Although I could not relate to the main character in many ways this book was very interesting and eye opening.
