Investigating Whether Guildford Has A Sustainable Transport System
To help me answer my enquiry questions, I am going to collect various
types of primary and secondary data. To answer my enquiry question
'Does Guildford town centre suffer from traffic congestion throughout
the day?' I will conduct a traffic count. I will do my traffic count
at 3 different times during the day, & do it at 2 different locations.
This should show me if there is traffic congestion throughout the day,
no just at one time, and if it is just in one place in Guildford that
gets congested, or other places as well. I will do my traffic survey
for 15 minutes at each time, and noting down what type of transport
comes through e.g. bus, car etc. Two roads I know in Guildford town
centre are Onslow Street and North Street. These roads are where I
will conduct my traffic count. I will pick three times during the day,
each 2 hours apart. This will show me congestion right through the
day, not just in the morning or in Rush Hour. I will do one at
10:00am, one at midday, and one at 2:00pm. I will try to carry out my
traffic counts as close to these times as possible.
To help me answer another enquiry question 'Does Guildford's transport
system encourage people to use alternative forms of transport to the
car?' I am going to do a tax disc survey. This will show me where cars
are coming from to get to Guildford. If there are not too many cars
from places around Surrey, then I can say that Guildford's transport
system obviously is encouraging alternative forms of transport.
However, if there are lots of cars from local areas, then I know that
Guildford's transport system isn't encouraging alternative forms of
transport to the car. I will carry this out by going to Millbrook car
park, a busy car park just on the edge of the town centre. I will look
on the tax disc of 20 cars, and write a tally of where all the cars

These days, it seems that everyone is talking about “sustainability” or “going green.” However, these terms are somewhat confusing and difficult to classify. Over the past few decades, the concept of sustainable viticulture has emerged and is spreading awareness to grape growers and winemakers across the United States and beyond.

Does UK Public transport live up to expectations? Introduction Public transportation has always been a key issue to the government by trying to promote public transport more than using a car. Today public transport is pushed more to help reduce factors of pollution and congestion which seem to be growing all over the UK. Transportation needs vary greatly depending on peoples commuting needs and therefore trying to focus on transport as a whole over the UK is very difficult to research. I have used over 20 documents to help me research this statement.

Since the late 1980s, the notion of ‘sustainable development’ has transcended beyond the eminent United Nations report titled Our Common Future, to mainstream dialogue throughout the globe at all scales within government and public spheres. This form of development seeks to balance current environmental, social and economic needs of the population, “without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” (World Commission on Environment and Development, 1987, 43). Used interchangeably with ‘sustainability’ (Seghezzo, 2009), the concept has been fastened to a plethora of themes, including that of cities where ‘urban sustainability’ speaks to negligent urban expansion and resource depletion. However, as the idea of urban sustainability has begun percolating into widespread discussions, so to have the obstacles and conflicts surrounding sustainable development. The following sections will examine these complexities, beginning with the ambiguity of sustainable development, followed by interpretations of urban sustainability, and finally, the political ecology of sustainable development in an urban environment.

In a world where over half of the human population calls a city their home, the need to restructure and revolutionize the way we design our urban environments has never been greater. Currently, the notion that these vast metropolises of metal, concrete, and sludge could one day be fully realized pillars of sustainability is certainly laughable. However, when these same cities are constantly growing and multiplying across the globe, all the while using a greater and greater chunk of our planet’s energy, this impossible task becomes a necessary focus. To strive towards the closed, continuous loop of “true” sustainability could greatly alter the image of the modern city. Any improvement over the current state of urban affairs could carry weight, and even if that goal is not entirely fulfilled, the gained benefits would be immense.
The fast population growth rate of humans means that the necessity for transportation vehicles is also enormously increasing. Studies have shown that in 1999 the worldwide number of vehicles registered was 700 million. From this huge number of vehicles, the US has a large share, which includes 200 million cars and light trucks. The number of cars worldwide also grew three times faster
