Introduction to Typography
Typography is all around us and we use it everyday to aid us in communication. It is essential to know the basics about typography and the different types of typography before it is discussed in the terms of ‘typography in society’. The basics of typography are: the different type families, and some technical terms which are imperative when discussing the technical and symbolic aspects of typefaces and letter forms.
Type Families
Roman
Roman is the standard style of typeface. It isn’t altered by width, weight, angle or any other defining characteristic. This particular type family is easy to read and is therefore often used as the body of a text, such as the text of a book.
Italic
Unlike roman type, italic type is set at an angle, and is generally slanting to the right from bottom to top. Italics isn’t a standard typeface and are specifically developed for a font which means that letters may be significantly different from its roman counterpart in order to improve its appearance and readability. Italics are not to be confused with oblique type, which is the roman type, slanted at an angle without altering the font.
Bold
Bolded type, is the Roman type, but with a heavier weight. There is no official name for bold type so it is often referred to as black or medium, etc. These names depend purely on the preference of the typeface designer.
Light
As oppose to Bold, Light is the thinner version of a roman font. Depending on the exact weight, a light type will be used at larger sizes so it is legible or if the designer wants to achieve a specific style. As with bold, there is no standard naming so names can vary from light, to ultra-light.

By being educated at a young age in literacy, I included it in my pottery and also working for newspaper companies strengthened my form of expression. Working in the South Carolina Republican and then later on The Edgefield Hive as a typesetter, it was a good experience helping my literacy skills but I didn’t feel fully indulged. I did it because I had to but also to learn. By understand typography, I was able to understand the science of the anatomy of type. They taught me the use of size, spacing, and placement of typography in order to show hierarchy, direction and attraction. I became to understanding that type is a collective of shapes and strokes. Michaela Cullington, a student, wrote a paper “Does Texting Affect Writing?” in 2010 for an English class. The paper is an examination of texting and the belief that it negative effective student’s writing. Cullington goes into detail about textspeak- “language created by these abbreviations”- and their use in formal writings. She organizes the paper in a way that is confusing to understand at first (pg. 1). At the end of the paper, she discusses her finding in her own research which comes to show that texting does not affect writing. But this is contradicting to the information she received from the teachers. The students and the teachers were seeing differences in the use of textspeak in formal writing. The Copperplate typeface is a typeface that all designers in the industry should learn and know about. At first glance the Copperplate typeface seems very common but if you look at it in depth you can see its many interesting characteristics. Back in the day this typeface was not so used as it is today, now we can see it representing many businesses and people are using it more and more. For various reasons some people like or dislike the Copperplate typeface. With more detailed information about this typeface that will be discussed in this essay you will be able to make your own decision and determine whether you like it or dislike it. The Copperplate typeface was given this name because in that time period (from 1530 to the 19th century) copperplate engraving was a very popular technique for reproducing illustrated materials. Copperplate typeface was designed by Frederic William Goudy and it was first introduced to the world in 1901.

The Romans left behind a substantial amount of remarkable legacies that are still standing or still have an immensely large impact on the world today. They built over 53,000 miles of roads to connect together every province in the empire, which were mainly built by the army and were built by hand. The Romans were responsible for building the Aqueduct, which were bridges that carried water into towns. In addition, the Romans built public latrines and systems of sewage pipes to carry sewage out of the streets and had the waste into the River Tiber, then out to sea. The language 'Latin' was first initiated and consummated by the Romans, which was written in an alphabet attained from the Greek alphabet. Times New Roman has a strong color on the page and influences of European early modern and Baroque printing. Its complete design is condensed like mentioned above, with short ascenders and descenders and a high x-height. All of these effects save space and increase accuracy. Even though, it is no longer used by the Times, Times New Roman is still widely used for book typography and has become ubiquitous on modern day computers. It has been the trigger for the development of many other serif faces.
Just as every system has rules, there are also very important and basic rules for roman numerals that must be followed. Numbers go from left to right, the only numbers on the left that can be subtracted are, “I”, “X” or “C”. What is writing style? I started out thinking that writing style is a personal thing and that all writers have their own style. But, this way of thinking is really just a simple way to answer the question. After more careful thought, I realized that style is actually quite the opposite of personal and original. Style is a form of standardization. As writers, we all follow certain rules and guidelines to make our point. Style is these rules and guidelines.
In the 1950s, Switzerland and Germany developed the International Typographic Style. Typically composition has a grid layout and san-serif fonts to create an asymmetrical organization of the elements used. This makes the information clear and easy to read. Later, in the 1960s, the United States went through a poster craze. The first wave of posters were often related to anti-establishment values, rock and roll and psychedelic drugs; often referred to as psychedelic posters. This movement had many characteristics from art nouveau, pop art and op-art movement.
