The nursing profession is founded upon collaborative relationships with patients and colleagues (Colleges of Nurses of Ontario, 2009). Nevertheless intraprofessional conflict has been identified as a significant issue within health care settings around the world. Factors that contribute to this type of conflict are individual differences, differing of opinions, values, educational levels, generational diversity, and poor communication; all of which lead to job dissatisfaction, poor patient outcomes and turnovers.
Interdisciplinary team work is a complex process which involves various disciplines within the health care setting which work together to share expertise, knowledge and skills to impact patient care. However interdisciplinary team work is increasing as a result of an aging population and higher number of patients with more complex needs associated with chronic diseases; along with increasing complexity of skills and increasing specialization within health professions (Susan A. To address the issue of conflict with intraprofessional and interdisciplinary teams a change in work environment must be implemented. To accomplish this nurses, nurse mangers, and other members of the health care team need to understand what constitutes conflict its consequences, and the impact it has on others and delivery of patient care (Almost, J. 2006).
