In the book, Into Thin Air, by Jon Krakauer, there are many interesting events that happen. In the beginning of the book, it starts off with where Jon Krakauer reaches the top of Everest, which happens later in the book. Then after that it then begins to describe many other climbers experiences on Everest and the history of Everest about what has happened on the mountain. After all of that is explained, it then gets into the story. It starts off with Jon, the main character on a plane to climb Everest. It also explains all of his experience climbing and how Everest is the hardest thing he will climb. He then gets to Kathmandu, his destination, and meets up with the team he will be climbing with. They then move closer and closer to Everest and stick together, then they reach it. They then begin to climb the mountain, and they all go at different paces, Rob Hall was their climbing leader. Many people were getting injured, scared, and having unfortunate things happen like your oxygen running out and you don't tell anyone. They made it up the camps, sometimes losing no one, but some people were definitely lost during the ascension, not dead, but injured. He made it to the top, with only a couple people having to get sent down. Jon was on his way down when a massive storm hit the mountain. He just made it down from the top, but there were many people stranded up there. He proceeded down the mountain, trying to escape it, but many of the people climbing died. Eventually Rob Hall was caught in it and he was killed, and so was 12 other people. Jon was very upset and was very shaken up by hearing this, and seeing it on the mountain. Chapter 7: In chapter 7 Krakauer talks about how Everest has changed from a professionals trek to anyone's trek. He explains that many inexperienced people have climbed Mount Everest with the help of sherpas and guides. He also mentions about the determination of Everest and how in some instances in history people who weren't allowed into Tibet or Nepal but they snuck in and managed to climb and summit Everest

Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer is an adventurous story about a Mount Everest expedition gone wrong. The journey up the mountain is like previous trips, but once they reach the top of the mountain all hell breaks loose. A massive storm traps climbers stuck on the top of the mountain with little to no oxygen, no shelter, and nowhere to go. Oxygen depletion alone can kill someone and make them vulnerable to novice mistakes. Krakauer notices when he is lacking oxygen as he says, “The world beyond the rubber mask was stupendously vivid but seemed not quite real, as if a movie were being projected in slow motion across the front of my goggles. I felt drugged, disengaged, thoroughly insulated from external stimuli” (179). HACE, a medical condition in which the brain swells, is caused by a lack of oxygen and can kill people within 48 hours if not treated. With a lack of shelter, the climbers are exposed to Artic-like conditions.

Ever since people knew it was possible to reach the summits of Mount Everest, about 4,000 people have attempted to climb it and one in four people have died from doing so. “Once Everest was determined to be the highest summit on earth, it was only a matter of time before people decided that Everest needed to be climbed” (Krakauer 13). The very first person to reach the summit of Mount Everest was in 1953, and ever since then about seven percent out of every 4,000 people that attempted have died. Everest is an unbelievable mountain that has taken the lives of a number of the greatest climbers in history. It was my job to ensure that clients make it up that treacherous mountain safely. My name is Rob Hall. I was the main guide and cofounder of a climbing company called Adventure Consultants. My friend, Gary Ball, and I used to be professional climbers. Together we succeeded in climbing to the highest summit on each of the seven continents in seven months. This was our greatest achievement. After this, we decided to start our own company guiding clients up large mountains. In May 1992, we successfully led six clients to the summit of Everest. Unfortunately, Gary died of cerebral edema in October 1993 during an attempt on the world’s sixth-tallest mountain. He died in my arms and the next day I buried him in a crevasse. Despite the pain that his death had caused me, I continued guiding for our company and eventually led thirty-nine climbers to the summit of Everest.
Progress is in the eye of the beholder. Throughout the years society has forced nature out of its life and has instead adopted a new mechanical and industrialized lifestyle. Technology may be deemed as progress by some, where it is thought of as a positive advancement for mankind. Yet technology can also be a hindrance for society, by imposing itself on society and emptying the meaning out of life. In “Autobiography at an Air-Station,” Philip Larkin conveys his distaste of how society has denounced nature. By employing an ironic tone in the sonnet, Larkin comments on the significance of the sonnet in relation to industrial life. Life has become ironic because it is no longer a natural life that society leads, but a fabricated life. Through his use of rhyme and meter, the extended metaphor comparing the air-station to life, imagery, and diction, Larkin reflects on what life has come to be: a deviation from the intrinsic.
Survivor’s guilt has to do with Into Thin Air because while climbing Mount Everest, around eight people died but others survived. Most of the deaths were caused by the mountain’s conditions, so they could have happened to anyone on the expedition. The people who survived feel guilty because they know that it could have been one of them who died. Survivor’s guilt comes into play after the first person on the expedition died. The guilt grows as more people begin to fall ill and die. People start to weaken while climbing Mount Everest. They wonder what could have happened differently in the beginning of the trek, and what will happen further along. The survivor’s guilt stays with the climbers when they get off the mountain and back into their
