However, interracial relationships tend to not work out because of the disapproval from society, diverse cultural views between the couples, and the fact that there are higher divorce rates with interracial relationships, than same race couples.
Societal disapproval is one of the main reasons why interracial relationships tend to not work out. Different cultural views can put a strain on interracial couple’s relationships. “Compared to Chinese norms, mainstream Canadian norms for dating and marriage promote more egalitarian gender roles and are more liberal about sexual activity. Individuals in Western cultures tend to select their relationship partner based on romantic love and their own personal fulfillment” (Lou, Evelina, et al. 622). If one of the partners do something, it can be offensive to the significant other’s cultural views. This has a possibility of leading to an argument; which is never good for a relationship. Also, there are people that are bicultural. Bicultural means, “Having access to two sets of cultural norms; they come into contact with the core cultural ideas and values of their heritage culture from their families, but their social systems and peers are predominately western” (Lou, Evelina, et al. 1). Married interracial relationships are more than likely to end in a divorce. Referring back to the different cultural views that interracial couples have, these differences can most likely lead to divorce. “Divorce rates among interracial couples are slightly higher than divorce rates among same race couples” (Interracial Marriage and Divorce par. 1). Most interracial relationships are made of African American and Caucasian people that will more likely end up divorcing because of all the complications mentioned above. According to Interracial Marriage and Divorce, “Asian male/white female marriages were 59% more likely to end in divorce than same race marriage…While interracial marriage correlates to a higher rate of divorce, this parallel applies mainly to marriages involving a non-white male and white female” (Interracial Marriage and Divorce par. 9). Due these previously mentioned complications, that interracial couples go through while dating or married, they are more likely to end in a divorce.
