Zootopia is the story of a small bunny who decides to make a big change when she moves from a rural farm to the heart of a big city. The bunny, whose name is Judy Hopps, vies to become a police officer, something that is never accomplished. In this world, the predators rule and the prey has no choice but to follow along with the current. Hopps wants to change that and she does, when she follows her dream and cracks a huge case that is threatening Zootopia. In this essay, we will look at three important interpersonal concepts that play a huge part in Zootopia, those being bullying, power and fear. Zootopia is considered a sly racial commentary by a lot of people because of how apparent the allusions to racial segregation and bullying are …show more content…

With parallels to bullying, individuals use power to be in control of many aspects of daily living. Whether it be controlling other individuals or controlling a situation, many people find comfort in power and the quest for power has led to many consequences throughout the existence of our planet. Unfortunately, power struggles even exist inside of a Disney movie. In Zootopia, the mayor of the city is a proud Lion, who walks all over his secretary, a small lamb. The power of the Lion is evident in his portrayal of himself, deep rooted inside of his mannerisms and speech as he flows through life like he owns it. Then, the entire city goes mad after a press-conference with Hopps, where she mistakenly instills fear of the predators while the secretary slowly takes over. I think this is a good example of what power can do to people and how it can manipulate their actions negatively (Kraemer, 2016). The effects of this change are catastrophic, with the secretary using her power to segregate the predators on a vengeance because of her own issues that led her to become filled …show more content…

Fear divides and conquers, and in Zootopia, fear was used in so many different ways. Fear was used by Judy’s parents in an attempt to convince her to abandon her dreams of becoming a police officer and fear was used by all of those around her when she finally got to Zootopia in an attempt of warding her off from her newfound job. Fear was used by the secretary to manipulate the people into being afraid of predators. Fear was used as a tactic of control, and that can be seen in real life too with politics. This is a good example in Zootopia because of how much the fear spread. It quickly consumed almost all of Zootopia and that can be seen parallel to how life works outside of the minds of Disney/Pixar. Fear made the citizens go against their better judgement in judging the predatory animals and cause chaos and hurt, just like real fear does (Brett, 2016). Fear is a natural instinct that is essential and important to safety in certain situations, but using fear to police people has the opposite effect. Zootopia wants to teach that fear never works, but unfortunately, that’s the one sugar coated truth that falls short. Fear does work, even when it
