The movie Bridesmaids has been my favorite movie since the first time I viewed it, with just the perfect amount of humor and real-life difficulties to satisfy. After I started learning about interpersonal communication I realized how many of my personal relationships use the concepts we have discussed as well as how I have used the concepts while becoming who I am now. From the beginning of the film until the end Annie is struggling to find her own self, often she is experiencing the negative cycle of the self-concept. Contributors to the self-concept include; self-esteem, reflected appraisal and social comparison, and all of this can be subjective, flexible and resistant to change. This scene really gives a visualization of Annie and Helen’s competitive relationship and with competition you are highly assertive and uncooperative. Having an entire relationship that is uncooperative but at the same time assertive is the definition of a really rough relationship and it definitely won’t last long. When you are seen as a negative person you feel negative, and after the many times Annie almost sabotaged Lilian’s wedding most of the bridal party deemed her a negative person that Lily shouldn’t even bother with. Ultimately Annie’s many freak outs landed her out of the bridal party as well as off the weddings guest list. This devastated her, not only was her friendship falling apart she wasn’t doing so well in the relationship department either and was also being forced to move home after losing her job. For Annie it was like hitting “rock bottom” and she became severely depressed over her foolish actions. On the day of Lilian’s wedding Helen visits Annie looking for Lilian and claims no one can find her, instinctually Annie helps find her. After locating her Annie visits her alone and discovers all the things Lilian I dealing with and how hard it has been for her not having her best friends support. During this scene Annie is able to see through Lily how she really is, a great, loyal friend who will always be there even if it makes her uncomfortable. She could not believe that she was going to pick up Helen Keller at the hotel. She was so excited that she started to dream about when she was a little girl and her father had given her the story of Helen Keller written by Annie Sullivan. When she arrived at the hotel, she got out of her car to greet Helen Keller and Polly Thomson. She took Helen's hand and placed her in the car with Mrs. Thomson. Then it came to her mind that they were going to be taking a very dangerous ride when they were to go up to the house. There were no sides to the car, so when she took very sharp turns, she was afraid that Helen might fall out of the car. So she warned them about the sharp and steep turns. When they got to this part of the journey, Helen started to sing, "This is fun!" and then she cried out, "Lovely!" When they reached the house, she helped the two women out of the car to greet Margot. She was invited to have lunch with Margot, Mrs. Thomson and Helen. They drove to the restaurant and went to sit down at their table. When Helen sat down, she felt around her area so she knew where her fork, spoon, knife, and plate were, and sat patiently.
She allows her mother to control her and make decisions for her. During their conversation, she asks her mom if she should marry Mr. Jones even if she does not love him. Her mother does not seem to care until Helen mentions that he is Vice-President of the company. Her mother says that she should marry him whether she loves him or not because he will be able to take care of her and Helen. They continue to discuss how Helen can marry this man that she doesn’t like so she will never have to work again and he can support her mother, or she can say no at the risk of losing her job and not being able to support her mother anymore. Interpersonal communication is underappreciated. When doing this media analysis paper for Breaking Bad I did not realize how much interpersonal communication played a role in this TV series. Communication, especially in TV series or movies, is critical to making a piece of media desirable and fun to watch for the viewer. Breaking Bad’s producers did a fantastic job with their writing of the script. Everything they wanted to communicate to the audience through the characters was fully understandable. Communication in our everyday life plays such an important part because it is how we communicate to the people around. It is how we express our emotions and thoughts. How she could’ve had a great successful life, but instead she’s trapped on the ranch, this is really shown when she is talking to Lennie. “ Coulda been in the movies, an’ had nice clothes — all them nice clothes like they wear. An’ I coulda sat in them big hotels, an’ had pitchers took of me. When they had them previews I coulda went to them, an’ spoke in the video, an’ it wouldn’ta cost me a cent because I was in the pitcher” (89). This shows how insecure she is about her life, she believes she could’ve been known. Rather than living on the ranch with Curley and being known as his wife. In this novel it shows how insecurity corrupts the trust of people and society. It shows that everyone is insecure about something in their life and acts out in ways where they can try to forget their insecurities and creates them for others, leading them to feel superior to others in society. This connects to real-life because today people are still insecure about something in their life, leading them to do things they wouldn’t normally do so they can feel better or makes them feel as if they have control. The film, The Breakfast Club, is an impressive work of art, addressing almost every aspect of interpersonal communication. This is easily seen here, as I’ve gone through and shown how all these principles of interpersonal communication apply to real-life, using only two short interpersonal interactions from the movie. I’ve explained aspects of interpersonal communication, nonverbal communication, verbal misunderstandings, communication styles, gender issues, and self-disclosures. With that said, I believe I have demonstrated my ability to apply principles of interpersonal communication with simulated real-life examples.
Kate is surprised that Annie is so young but Annie to that says “I mean to try… They can’t put you in jail for trying” (23), even though no one has ever taught someone like Helen. Annie may be young and may seem to be unskilled, but she doesn’t let that stop her. She gets this job to teach a deaf and a blind child so she will give it her all even though it is not believed to be possible. To actually get some work done with Helen, Annie says “...leave me alone with her” (50) because she wants her to get away from all the pity from her family. Annie thinks all the pity from Helen’s family is draining out all that she is teaching Helen. She does not think that Helen is learning anything with her family letting her do whatever she wants without consequence. Knowing where to find them, she takes her goodbye with her dead family.
