In my view, international students shouldn’t be asked to pay more money for the tuition.
To approach this problem, we should, first and foremost, reiterate why people put such an emphasis on good education. Firstly, education improves people’s learning ability that makes them know more about the world. Most things taught in schools are the basic skills or means to further understanding of our society. Only be learning can humans have an opportunity to study more and know more about the society. Secondly, social experience tells us opportunities are often given to someone who has received good education. Employers tend to believe that people have higher education are more intelligent and that they can manage to do their job better and adapt to the working environment more quickly. That explains why educated people, more often than not, can land a very good job. Thirdly, educated people usually act more polite and civilized. People who understand the importance of learning know that they are good enough so they have patience and eagerness to learn from other people. And this is of great significance for a nation’s growth and prosperity. Last, with the development of today’s technology, education becomes even more valuable than ever before. The mentioned four points explains not only why education is important but also why more and more parents are sending their children to English speaking countries like the United States and the UK to study. Because the reality is that universities and colleges in these countries can provide better education, that is to say, better qualifications and more competitive edges for their children to land a dream job and achieve what they want for their life in the future. To sum up, there is no reason that international students should pay more money about their tuition fees. Education, in nature, is a cause to educate people instead of making money. While most people want college to be free, the U.S. should not make tuition free for all citizens. There are many who believe the higher the tuition the better the education the student will receive. Nemko stated that even though some high school students are able to make it through college, he offered that the benefit for those students would not outweigh the “often six figure cost.” $100,000.00! What exactly are students are paying for? William Deresiewicz, who wrote “The Miseducation of America,” spoke of “institutional competition, expansion, and borrowing” as well as “administrative bloat, the rise of the “party track” and its concomitant amenities.” I believe this may be the bulk of what students are paying for in main stream universities. Colleges should promote what they have to offer based on what students are able to learn during the time spent at college, not based on which colleges have the most available amenities. Charging more for tuition can be beneficial to a college and its board members. However, it does not always seem beneficial to the students attending or family members paying the tuition fees. Nemko argues that “institutions tend to educate students in the cheapest way possible” and goes on to say that colleges offer big and small classes, but that the classes are being taught by teacher’s assistants and not professors. I believe that if a college is going to charge so much for students to attend, its classes should be taught by an actual professor. Deresiewicz emphasizes that “colleges and universities have a lot to answer for.” He states that “if they want to regain their support of the larger society, they need to prove that they are worthy of it.” One way to do this would be for colleges and universities to take all the funds they are putting elsewhere and invest it into the college professors. The main reasons that tuition should be lowered are that students need an easier and a cheaper access to higher education, so that children who are born into poverty have a chance to make a better life for themselves, and so that the amount of student debt in America is decreased. Currently, students do not have a simple or inexpensive access to higher education due to the increasing cost of tuition and the decreasing amount of scholarships being awarded. Education offered to the public should be free. Public universities that once charged themselves to open doors for students are now charging students to open doors for them. As Cox found, “an increasing number of parents are recognizing the battle that is waged for their children’s hearts and minds” (Cox p. 34) and it is important that their children are equipped with the best hearts and minds so they can effectively function in society. Both of the authors for these articles acquired advanced education which may explain their bias toward the importance of education. However, evidence shows that education is one of the factors responsible for the success of a nation. Workers, who after graduation are able to “enter the working world equipped with the same basic education,” have a step up from those who were not able to fulfill those educational standards. While society says that it values education, it is apparent that actions are not being seriously taken by the educated population to effectively keep public education as a focus in policy holder’s hands.
The international students are expected to pay the full tuition fee, whereas the domestic students are eligible for heavy government subsidies and that is one of the reasons why there is a huge difference between the fee amounts.
