The key to all successful companies, healthy relationships and positive interactions is effective communication. Some vital factors in effective communication are open-mindedness, unbiased views of others and their opinions and respect for cultural differences. These factors will in turn lead to successful collaborations, a better workplace environment, and an overall healthy atmosphere. Two of the largest issues plaguing workplace environments are ethnocentrism and stereotyping. These issues can cause major rift between employees, management, and customer relationships. In order to transform the possible lack of respect between Americans and their international counterparts it is important to implement a multicultural approach to leveling out the basis of communication otherwise known as the intercultural sensitivity model. The states of this model are: denial, defense, minimization, acceptance, adaptation and integration (Bennett, 2008). The first three stages represent the initial state of mind of the person offending others in the workplace environment. A strong denial for their offense, a lack of concern for the culture, lifestyle, beliefs and customs of others, and the belittling of their counterparts. The second set of steps is the transformation to a more understanding employee who can adapt to and respect the differences of their counterparts and their culture.
