When discussing integrity and ethics regarding law enforcement it is difficult to just narrow down to one element representative thereof. The first item of importance referring to integrity is, to be honest, and transparent in everything that you do so that the public can see you, as a community representative, are trying to foster good working community relations and that you as a leader will not stand for any misconduct. Recently here in Nashville, Tennessee (Alund & Sawyer, 2017) we were faced with an officer involved shooting of a suspect who evaded, possessed a loaded weapon, and fought up until the point the officer felt an immense fear for his safety and the safety of the community so unfortunately he was left with no alternative. Unfortunately, the victim passed in surgery. The suspect was later found to be driving on a revoked driver’s license, serving an 8-year probation for drug …show more content…

There are times that even when you are honest and transparent, the community still demands more action and often times their demands are ludicrous and self-absorbed which creates a barrier to a partnership between the citizens and police who are trying to keep everyone safe. It is up to each individual officer to go out and do his or her job to the best of their abilities while putting aside any personal feelings and bias. As an officer, your job is to protect everyone regardless of their affiliations and at the same time, one must remain consistent, fair and understanding. As a patrol officer myself and as a department leader it is important that we in law enforcement display a certain level of empathy so that we can earn the trust of the community which can eventually make or break our overall success in society. We as leaders must walk the walk and talk the talk so that others may follow our
