Insight on the Life and Works of Julia Alvarez

A novelist and a poet, Julia Alvarez is considered to be one of the greats when talking about American literature. At her current age of 64, she has a numerous amount of writings and has won many awards. Personal life experiences from her youth to the Civil War to now have highly influenced her works (Heredia). Descriptive and influential, it is clear why Alvarez’s publications have influenced society the way they have today.
Aged 64, Julia Alvarez is considered to be one of the greatest American writers of current times. Although she was born a native of New York City on March 27, 1950, Alvarez spent her childhood in the Dominican Republic, only to have her family be forced back to the United States to avoid penalization when her father became caught up in the rebellion against the dictator (Biography Today). During her time in the Dominic Republic, Alvarez lived a very American-influenced life; she and her siblings and cousins were given an opportunity to go to a school run by Americans, ate American food, dressed in American styles, and even spoke “Spanglish”. The Oxford American Dictionary defines this term as “a hybrid language combining words and idioms from both Spanish and English.” Alvarez attended a boarding school with her sisters upon their return to New York, where they learned a more vernacular form of English. If not for having returned to America, Alvarez might not have taken interest in books, as she came from a culture of storytellers, not readers (Heredia). It was through her life changes that Alvarez came to love reading and writing.
