A refugee is someone who is forced away from their homes by natural disaster of war. Ha is a character from the novel Inside Out and Back Again who is childish and sneaky. She lived in Saigon in south vietnam. She had three brothers and a Mother but no Father. Ha’s Father got lost on a mission. Inside Out and Back again is a book by Thanhha Lai.
I believe that all refugees go through the same basic things, running from a big problem. In Children of War by Arthur Brice the text states “ While another two million have been driven from their homes”(Brice 25). This evidence shows how millions of refugees have been forced from their homes turning their lives inside out. Thanhha Lai said in Inside Out and Back Again “There won’t be a South Vietnam left to abandoned(Lai 43). This evidence shows how the people of South Vietnam had to flee because of war and because of that their lives have been turned inside out. The author states “thousands found out about the navy ships ready to abandon the navy”(Lia 61). This quote shows how many people are abandoning South Vietnam. All of this evidence shows how all refugees are running from a big problem.

What this means is she is warming up to her now life and it is turning back again. The author states “I go to the board chalk the answer in five moves”(Lia 187). This evidence tells you how Ha is warming up to the english math and school. The novel says “She makes me memorize one new word a day and practice it ten times in conversation”(Lai 166). Refugees have to face losing a loved one to losing a little thing like a doll both hurts them greatly. Like many refugees, Ha the main character in the book “Inside out & Back again” by Thanhha Lai, have to face the similar losses as other refugees.Many refugees, like Ha, face the feeling of turning “Inside out” when they mourn the losses of their loved ones and their precious belongings, then they are able to turn “back again” with acceptance and support from their communities and friends.

For years refugees have come to America from all over the globe coming from Syria, Vietnam, Iraq, and even Australia. A refugee is different than an immigrant, in such a way that they are basically forced to leave their country in order to escape war, persecution, or a natural disaster. Unlike immigrants who have been here for a long time like the Mexicans, or the Japanese, the Vietnamese have been in the U.S for around thirty years or less. After the Vietnam War, the Vietnamese feared for their life and were forced to leave their county for liberty. The Vietnamese arrived here as refugees, not voluntary immigrants.

Salva, in A Long Walk to Water, was a refugee, and still is. He, along with many others, was a victim of the War in Sudan. He was fearful for his life so he had to flee his home and wound up in America, fulfilling his purpose by giving back to all of the people in Sudan, where he once was victimized. Refugees share similar experiences and emotions when they move to a new country. The book Inside Out and Back Again splits these feelings into two categories, “inside out” and “back again”. Refugees from around the world experience these feelings. For instance, it is easy for a refugee to feel “inside out” when learning a new language, or they can feel “back again” when they find a familiar object that reminds them of their past. Many refugees mainly struggle with learning a new language, but to make them feel more comfortable, they can find satisfaction in items from their home land.
In an article about refugee children in Canada, the authors state “The community...play[s] a crucial role in assisting and supporting children to adjust and integrate into… society.” (Fantino & Colak). This quote demonstrates that with the community’s consistent support, refugees can have a sense of belonging in their new homes, which can be extremely important while trying to acclimate to society. In Inside Out and Back Again, Há says “She says it over and over like a chant, slowly. Slowly the screams that never stopped inside my head turned to a real whisper” (Lai 210) while describing the actions of Mrs. Washington, a neighbor and role model of Há’s. Mrs. Washington played an important part in Há becoming used to Alabama, clearly demonstrated when she helped Há calm down after she was bullied and disrespected by Pink Boy after school. Due to Mrs. Washington’s actions, Há could feel more supported during her struggle against the bully, and in turn she could feel like she was “Back Again” in her new environment. Há says in one of her poems that “Before school our cowboy shows up… he whispers to Mother and Brother Quang” (Lai 203). After being bullied, her family’s sponsor finally gives her support by trying to fight back against Pink Boy. Though this action doesn’t help Há at the the time, it helps Há feel like she is supported during her adjustment. This support, in addition to the support given by Mrs. Washington, results in Há feeling like she belongs, which helps her make it through her difficult journey of adjusting to Western society. Post-Traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) develops after a traumatic or life-threatening event such as war, assault, or disaster. In most cases refugees are exposed to and carry these experiences of hostility, violence, racism, discrimination, and isolation with them to their new environment (Kulwicki,A., & Ballout,S., 2008). The resettlement period for refugees is found to be extremely critical because it inflames existing symptoms of PTSD in addition to increasing them.
Before playing the game, I empathized with refugees, and how much they had to go through before settling down in Canada, or the USA, etc. The main reason refugees become refugees is because they are forced out of their home country because of an ongoing war, or a controlling government, or other various push factors. They don’t become refugees by choice, it’s by force. After playing the game though, after actually experiencing the emotions refugees feel while escaping their country, it made me more aware as to how much terror is embedded into their minds. A lot of refugees are children, and to feel that much sorrow in such early years of their lives, it’s heartbreaking.
